Top 10 movies in your collection (dvd, blu ray, whatever!)

Post by TheMyth on Sat Jan 03, 2009 3:30 pm

so, I was thinking about buying some more movies, but like always, I go into JB, walk the isles of movies and end up having no idea what to buy.

so help me out peps.

what are the top 10 movies you own, and yes you must OWN them. this isn't a list of your top ten movies, its a list of your top ten dvd's / blu ray disks.

I'd list mine, but it's not really the point, I wanna see what everyone else has and likes, and anything that catches my eye on the lists I may just go out and grab.

thanks gang!

A top ten movies is too difficult to compile atm, so looking over my collection, thought I would limit it to mostly tv, one excellent movie doco and a couple of essentials...

Lost 1-4
The Office 1&2 and Xmas Special
Life On Mars 1&2
Spaced 1&2
Extras 1&2 and Xmas Special
Jekyll
Dead Set (U.K 5 part series Big Brother/28 Days Later kinda thing)
Metallica-Some Kind Of Monster
Blade Runner-Final Cut
Lord Of The Rings

Lets see...

To answer your question honestly, I'd say:

Alien Quadrilogy (Region 1 US - 9-disc DVD set)
Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn (Region 1 US - THX Special Edition DVD)
Hellboy (Region 4 AU - Director's Cut 3-disc DVD)
Lord Of Illusions (Region 1 US - Unrated Director's Cut DVD)
Pan's Labyrinth (Region 2 UK - 2-disc DVD)
RoboCop (Region 4 AU - Special Edition DVD)
Se7en (Region 4 AU - Deluxe Special Edition 2-disc DVD)
The Thing (Region B AU - BD50 Blu-ray)
Tropic Thunder (Region A US - Director's Cut Blu-ray)
WALL-E (Region A US - 3-disc Blu-ray)

But for the reason you're asking, I don't think that answer may necessarily be of that much help to you (containing very few releases available locally).

So here's a list of specifically Region 4 DVD / Region B BD titles I have that I highly recommend:

Bubba Ho-Tep (Collector's Edition 2-disc DVD)
Close Encounters Of The Third Kind (30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition 2-disc Blu-ray)
Enter The Dragon (Blu-ray)
Freaks [1932] (DVD)
Hellboy (Director's Cut 3-disc DVD)
Iron Man (Ultimate Edition 2-disc Blu-ray)
Mortal Kombat Conquest Vol. 1-3 & Vol. 4-6 (2x 3-disc DVD sets)
The Ripping Friends (2-disc DVD)
Se7en (Deluxe Special Edition 2-disc DVD)
The Thing (BD50 Blu-ray)

my favourite rewatchables

Godfather Restoration boxset (blu-ray) For Parts I/II, still watch these once or twice a year, still adore the NYE Fredo/Michael scene as much as the first time I ever saw it
Seven Samurai (DVD) The original Kurosawa version
There Will Be Blood (Blu-ray) It's long buuuuut it is the most evenly paced movie I have ever seen and has absolutely beautiful scenery
Dumb and Dumber (DVD) stil makes me laugh even though it's so stupid and juvenile
Batman Begins/Dark Knight boxset (Blu-ray) Obviously for TDK but it's cheaper to get them together
The 400 Blows (DVD) Truffaut French New Wave classic. I'm incredibly jacked off that Criterion are region locking their blurays so I can't upgrade on this one yet.
Lord of the Rings (DVD) Can no longer rewatch these over a day/couple of days like I used to though
Star Wars IV/V/VI (DVD) What can I say, I'm a kid of the 80's
Casablanca (DVD) I know the story, I know the lines, but I still find this so cool to watch
Silence of the Lambs (DVD) It's rare that I watch a suspence/thriller again, but SotL has something extra that keeps me coming back

Argh didn't inlclude any TV series, so here's a few

Shield/The Wire These two approach the genre in completely different ways than the usual generic (ie forgetable/dull) police shows
Seinfeld Still going though the entire series of this, forgot how good it was for so long
The Royle Family Enjoy this more than the Office which kind of stole the observational mockumentary idea
Blackadder Still funny, especially the middle seasons. Stay away from the later 'Specials' which are anything but
Babylon 5 Along with the current Galactica, the best sci-fi show I've ever watched. Once you get through Season 1 where the show finds it's feet, seasons 2-4 are incredible for the overarching story which you never knew was there
The West Wing Of the 7 seasons, 1-4 are fantastic and then it kind of loses it's way for a while
Mad Men I think SBS start screening the first season of this soon though

Got a different mix of things - sorry can't do a list of ten
Foreign:
Les Documents Interdits - Collection of the forbidden files from SBS's Eat Carpet show
City of Lost Children - with Ron Pearlman great movie
Intacto - I think is being remade american style about a ring of "lucky" people who gamble on luck
Doco/reality - some you may need to like the band/person etc to be interested but are great dvd's
Jamiroquai - Live in Verona
Incubus - Alive at Red Rocks
Slipknot - Disasterpieces
Rash - about Melb street art
Ultimate Jordan - 20th anniversary edition - 8 dvd's worth of 90's gold
Pumping Iron - even if you don't like Arnie this is a great watch
Movies -
Ninja Scroll - easily my favourite Anime (cause I don't own Afro Samurai yet)
Alien Quadrillogy
Matrix Trillogy
Swingers
Clerks
Sideways
Garden State
Blair Witch Project
and for something less commercial
∏ (Pi)
The Cooler
Primer
