Anyone wanna go halves in a comic shop?

Post by The Dr Of Style on Wed Nov 26, 2008 12:45 pm

Holy crap....Quality comics....a shop that apart from the local Coles I frequent the most here in Perth is shutting down in 2 weeks....this weeks orders were the last shipment. Man I've shopped at this place since the mid 90's when they bought out Comic Shop. They survived the late 90's slump (Comic City didn't) and now are closing...the word is that $70,000 will clear their debt with suppliers and that's all they want....nothing for stock/ goodwill etc.... a few years down the track I might have considered it too......really I think Perth is probably a bit too small to support two shops, especially when there are now other places that sell trades etc and with the dollar being crap recently it's obviously getting tight on the margins.....was also dissapointed last week to see that Orbit Amusements is also gone from the city.....damn those home consoles.......now Perth really is Dullsville.....Comic zone just got a new customer tho but I might use this as an excuse to cull the pull list again

You serious? I've got like 2 1/2 months worth of stuff sitting in my pullbox since flying out to the US. I remember shopping at QC when they used to be on Milligan Street near Fast Eddies.

I'd even consider it if I was in the area, and I'm not exactly a comic person. o_o

Why, exactly? I can't see running or co-owning or having anything to do with this store as being profitable...

Seems their last day of official business is Dec 24th. I wonder if Comic Zone (the old QC crew) will make the $70K purchase.

I think there are a lot of things comic shops do wrong in not attracting business. Chief among them is not capitalising on big movies when they come out.

I was just in there, all their toys are marked down except their Marvel Select, it all feels very depressing. They were a great shop in their heyday.

And making them more approachable to the walk in customer. A lot focus on the hardcore comicnut...and alienate new business. Kings in Sydney is a great example of a good layout. The previous 3 shop fitouts/locations were extremely poor.

As I said ages ago, it's the classic case of people buying a business to get a wage, not for the love or promotion of their product/genre......And saddly Good Dr If it happened 6 yrs ago or in another 5 yrs I would strongly consider it (and have the actual funds) but currently I'm struggling to be allowed to get a PS3 letalone achieve one of my childhood dreams of actually becoming brodie bruce in my own shop

Yeah, but I think they miss a massive opportunity with their big glass windows out the front. Why put lots of expensive stock in the window? Things like mini-busts and the like? To the casual passer-by, they may look at that display and just go, $150 for that little statue? No thanks.

They'd be so much better served by tieing their displays to the big movie releases, sale items, something to entice people in rather than the big ticket items.

good point....and yeah, pricing window items is not a good way to entice people inside.

They have almost none left for toys and figures. But for comics they still have a lot. The statues they have on the back were already taken. The guy that works there told me that all of them were already paid and that the guy just didn't get them and now he took everything he ordered which took him 6 visits to get all the stuff.

I think the location is not that great but thinking it's just gonna be a comic book shop that doesn't matter, what matters is the items that you're offering. And yeah I agree with simmo that they should rather put something else in the glass display instead of the busts that are expensive. Plus the fact that our economy is really not good right now, you'll see comic prices go up next year

Walked in the other day to find out it was closing. Missed this thread.

So sad. They were awesome in putting aside DC Direct figures for me. Plus they were really cheap.

I'm not big comic collector, just religiously got my DCD figures from them.

Comic Zone seems ok but just doesn't seem the same.

When I was there last, one of the guys behind the desk mentioned that he was trying to keep the store open. I think he needed some backing and/or more information on the current lease.

i didnt think anything was priced in the front window
the front window reminds ppl of there childhood and coxes ppl in
then alot of the time the guys have no idea what anything is worth and pay the price
