Aussie Dollar took a tumble. Toys from overseas.

Post by Shadowless on Fri Oct 10, 2008 2:58 am

Well I was going to order some of the Four Horsemen exclusive figures as well as a couple of random things from eBay. Looks as though that will have to wait now. Our dollar is in the toilet again so I canít afford it now. Our buck has started to slowly climb, though it isnít expected to reach as high as it did when it reached past the US .90 mark. So this is not a good time for anyone to buy from overseas sellers on eBay and so onÖ. Sad

Its gonna be this way for a good while i suspect, so Ill cut back, but wont stop completely. I think Id only stop if it fell below 60, which hopefully wont happen...

Yeah, our local comic store (in Brisbane) has just increased prices due to the drop in the dollar. To their credit, they dropped their prices also when the dollar was at a higher rate.

Just as I had thoughts of collecting more than the "essential" MOTUC figures. Back to restricting myself to only the "essential" characters now and very much hoping that Skeletor is released in December with He-Man so I can save some $ on shipping.

Glad I managed to get a couple of bargains while the $ was strong though. My Dr Who collection is looking pretty healthy and I managed to pick up a couple of long sought after Buffy/Angel figures pretty cheaply including Red Dress Glory.

Not sure what to do about DCUC now though. I have no interest in buying cases of the figures, but the Evil-Bay prices were pretty high even before the dollar took a tumble. I might have to restrict myself to the "big three" although I had planned to at least assemble the Justice League (plus Hawkgirl to make the JLU version).

Also sucks for DVDs. Luckily I managed to grab all 10 seasons of Stargate for about $120 (AUS) including shipping so that should keep me occupied for quite a while.

Cheers.

Well no-one was happier than myself and UCK with the dollar exchange, while we were in the USA it sat at 98.7 pretty much the whole time we were there, and dropped almost as soon as we got back, very lucky indeed!!

don't expect things to get any better, in actual fact it will probably get a lot worse.

with the world economy shot to shiate, I'm thinking the old toy hobby may be the first too go for a lot of people.

You guys were really fortunate with the timing of SDCC. Personally I'm glad I have the ML Ares/Red Hulk waves on their way. Have been trying to get a lot of the stuff I'm after as soon as I could so it only leaves me having to pay for the few remaining items, like the SS 1/6 Stormtrooper in a month or so, and avoids hitting my wallet at the end of the year when I'll have other expenses.

Yeah the dollar is sucking major A at the moment. If work wasn't paying for my accomodation and food here in the US, then I'd be double-timing it back home *sigh* so much for building up my Bowen mini-bust collection.

The last time I was here in January I got about 96c for the dollar. Since arriving in Colorado in September I've seen it drop like a lead balloon.

It's not all doom and gloom, with the amount that the interest rates have droped recently we can afford to pay a bit more for toys.
I still remember getting $2000 U.S for $2120.00 AUS and that was only 2 months ago man i miss SDCC i hope that the speculations are true and that interest rates drop again as i will start to syphon off money to fund me and DBF's next trip......

Thank god this thread reminded me of my Gentle Giant pre-order. I've emailed them asking to cancel it - I'm not interested in paying anymore for my order than what it was at when the dollar was good. Hopefully they'll let me out.

EDIT: Must say, thats excellent customer service. Got an email 3 hours ago (it's now almost 8am) telling me they'd cancelled the order as per my wishes. I feel a whole lot better now!

Someone is making a fortune out of this 'global economic crisis' - I mean, what is the stockmarket except legitimised gambling?
Why does the govt give out BILLIONS of OUR $$ to the banks? The same banks that charge us through the a** in interest and fees?
I'm so sick of corporate welfare.
And why can't I cash in my bloody super to pay out my mortgage before it all gets swallowed up in corporate welfare???
Capitalism sucks man,

Oi!

I had two big orders on eBay from Americans. Had I paid them 3 days earlier I would have avoided all this! As it was I paid through the nose.

Had to cancel an order with Ringside Collectibles worth about $330US. I don't usually place such big orders with them but I thought what the hell, the dollar isn't that bad.

How things can change in a week. Sad

Can't believe the dollar has dropped to US62 cents, that definitely kills any hopes of me nabbing any action figure goodness over here. Actually looking forward to coming home now.

One thing I've been wondering is what has the average relationship between the US and AUS $ been over the last, say, 30 odd years? Where do we usually sit? is it around .7?

The only major item I have to go for the year is the Sideshow Stormtrooper. Fortunately I preordered the other upcoming Sideshow stuff from CF before they revised their preorder pricing when the dollar took a tumble. Anyone still looking to pick up the ML AoA Sunfire figure might want to keep an eye on their website in the coming weeks as well...
