Gaming expensive

Post by drspleen on Tue Sep 02, 2008 2:41 am

Little article at Gamespot about how gaming in Aus is expensive. Alot of the arguments are also applicable to the toy industry.

I'm amused at the prices of Orange Box. $40 on Steam, $100 at EB.

Yeah I sometimes look at the prices I'm paying for comics and wonder why with the recent 20c increase in the value of the aussie$ I'm yet to get a discount at the shops..... In recent years I don't think I've bought a video game new at all.... patient use of ebay has already got me 6 PS3 games for $30 each

Its not just games/comics/toy figs etc.

My mate has been after a H2 Hummer for the last 2 years, he has been saving relentlessly for one, as his wife said you can get one with your O/T etc.

He was going to buy one here in the car yards - $115-$135k for a 2002-2003 model in Sydney, in Queensland they are $110 - $115 for the same car.

But another mate got one from the states for his wife - Shipped/Converted to right hand drive/Taxes/ORC's and he had change from $80K AUD!!!!!

His was bought off ebay, came with 28" wheels , full leather interior in light blue and a 10k DVD/Tv stereo system, so how does that work out????

Also why are cars etc cheaper in Qld - I thought they made the same wages etc as us? Last time I was up there 6 weeks ago to pick up a car petrol was 19c cheaper than sydney and food was cheaper too... Arent we in the same country?

State taxes on cars & petrol in QLD are cut (or at least dramatically lessened).

Elsewhere cars and fuel are taxed on BOTH a federal AND state level.

For some reason QLD does away with such heavy taxing.

(I once listened to 2 truckie relatives have a long discussion on the topic)

And they have been supported with more funding by the federal government for doing so, courtesy of taxpayers of Vic and NSW for years now.

But are their wages the same as ours for the same positions etc?

Cause the house etc are lower in price range than lets say Sydney and Melbourne, so if the money was the same then it would be wiser to cut costs and move to Qld and have more than staying in Sydney - then thered be a mass exodus.

But then again the clubs and anything decent to do in Brisbane was closed at 12 - 1am I was told too. And from what I got told by a mate who went to visit family, after 10.00 - 11.00 at night theres not alot of options for entertainment etc...

Maybe a move is on my part - my business can go interstate and if it means more money for my daughter and a easier bought expensive house then why not.

But I guess if you move back to Sydney or Melb youd be too far behind price wise.

Well there has been an exodus from the lower states for years now. Average house prices are now on par with Melbourne, and wages have a general parity across Australia. The most obvious deterrent for anyone thinking of moving up there would of course be having to actually live there Razz

I don't think you'd see a mass exodus, from what I've heard though (this could just be govt propaganda), SEQLD is the fastest growing region of Oz. Tonnes of people are moving to brisbane. I think it's actually more than the current infrastructure currently supports... but maybe i'm just grumpy because there seem to be more cars on the roads.

This is true. There are things for people who want to stay out late but the majority of things are geared towards daytime/outdoor activities...

I know this is going to sound racial, but its not, what are the lebs like in Qld? Im not just meaning the idiots but all of them across the board? Do they live mainly in certain areas in Brisbane like they do in Sydney.

Being a muslim and going to the mosque etc, I see enough heroes and idiots here to let alone move to be surrounded by more, plus I heard rumours that they are not really liked in Brisbane. Not being racial or anything just curious.

Oh and Im not Leb, but friends I know up there are, and you hear the stories of Lebs v Australians... I dont agree with it but some of each side are idiots.

can we talk about that maybe?
This topic is like a conversation between me and DBF it starts out good and ends up about a lot of shit. Laughing

Pot and ex are cheaper in QLD too (you got Nimbin just over the border) so there are a few options for entertainment after the clubs close... Wink
