Re: What are people reading?

Post by Sledge Hammer! on Tue May 12, 2009 4:18 pm

I'm...what month is it now? Damn, May, so that's 5 months or so behind in my comics reading. New job with long hours that I got just before new year has played havoc with my spare time, I don't think I've read a comic this year, so I'm waaay behind now.

I was reading probably 80-90% of everything DC was putting out, a handful of Vertigo titles, and the majority of Wildstorms stuff. As well as about half of Marvel's regular titles, and a few Dynamite and Dark Horse titles on top of that. So that's a big ol' cold turkey snap to go from all of that to, well, nothing, nada, zippo. Probably lucky I didn't go into geek shock... Laughing

I have no idea how any of the books are at the moment, but my fave reads back when I was still reading were Jonah Hex, JSA (now under a new writer who I haven't read any JSA issues of yet), Green Lantern, Booster Gold (haven't read any post Johns issues yet), Simon Dark (cancelled I believe?), Detective, Catwoman (cancelled) and Action at DC. 100 Bullets (now complete), DMZ, Hellblazer & Scalped at Vertigo. Conan, The Goon & Solomon Kane at Dark Horse. Red Sonja, The Boys and The Lone Ranger at Dynamite. And Punisher MAX (now retitled Frank Castle - The Punisher I believe), Captain America, Iron Man and Iron Fist at Marvel. Oh, and Vampirella from Harris and Bomb Queen from Image on the odd occasions when a new issue (or series) comes out.

As for proper book reading, I've been looking to finally start into the Dark Tower series of books soon, but again, it's just finding the time to be able to do so...

So do you have a massive pile of holds at a comic shop? or bought them all and they're in a pile at home....i'm a bit like that at the moment.....same starting a new job.....just not finding the time to read em all....have been reading 100 bullets & any punishers coming out but the rest of the list is slowly piling up..... Must say tho that the pull list will be being cut soon again as looks like I'm getting an investment loan & starting to save for kids next year so I will be selective on what I'm buying from here out...6-7 bucks a comic starts to add up each month

Finally read the fourth trade in the Astonishing Xmen series, Unstoppable, by Whedon and Cassady.

F***ing awesome. Ending even almost but not quite brought a tear to the eye. Great read and beautiful art. Highly recommended.

I read this as monthlies as they came out, and the ending to the giant sized issue was fantastic. One of the best things I have read in the past year for sure.

Yeah I've got a massive stack of comics in the hallway closet to get through, once I play catch up proper and know how I feel about where each title is currently at then I too will be trimming back pretty radically methinks, and just sticking to must reads and favorite characters...which should still be more than enough.

Fables is great, read the latest trades as soon as I get them. Jack of Fables on the other hand is not as good, i'd managed to accumulate the last 3 trades in my read pile and only got through them this past week. Ideally, you judge a book on its own merits, but when it's a spin off it's hard not to. Maybe the Fables crossover might help shake the book up and give it some direction.

...and the week before reading this...

I'm really enjoying this WH40K stuff even though this series is set around the year 30,000 and I'm not reading in order.

Spent the last month reading The Night Angel trilogy (Brent Weeks);
The Way of the Shadows,
Shadows Edge, and
Beyond the Shadows...all an excellent read 9/10.

plus

Fate of the Jedi (book2): Omen,
This one 6/10 it was more like the first thrid of a full novel, rather that part of a series.
Very short, large print and wasted page space. not worth the hardcover price.
