Broadband info please.

Post by UncleCletusKasady on Thu Mar 20, 2008 8:45 am

Im not really savy with the latest range of broadband and such out here and was wondering what to get?
Currently have the virgin unwired home phone and internet thing and it is pretty poor unwired speeds are like dial up and it drop's out a looooooot, dont even mention skype or webcams as its a joke.
What i need is the ability to use skype (properly) webcams for talking to the u.k, i wont be super downloading heaps of movies and what not but it would be nice to be able to download some youtube videos and not have to try 4 times and wait an hour, the odd song for the wife on itunes, the ability should i go through with it to play my PS3 online, and thats pretty much it any info would be great i can get telstra cable in my area and ADSL if i want was also thinking about getting foxtel and i deffinetly need a landline home phone as well.
It is like hunting for the holy grail trying to work out all the different packages so if anybody has any help i would more than likely add them as a friend on messenger (although i may block you).
Ta muchly

This is where you'll want to go:

http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/bc-plan.cfm

Enter your details, and it'll compile a list of the best broadband plans in your area according to your specified information.

Also sign up, and hit the forum there for THE BEST Australian broadband info online.

The peeps there wont steer you wrong.

A personal addage, get a Wireless Router. You can get a great one for <$80 these days, and it does everything a normal broadband modem does, but you can have your PS3 hooked upto it wirelessly.

I don't know how you do it but you do and thats good enough for me.
Reckon i will get the Telstra extreme liberty deal as it was the deal i was looking at and the site you refered me to put it up as my top choice.
Don't suppose you could explain quantum entanglment and how it could potentially be used in the future as a means of teleportation? Laughing
Before you go and do it im only joking i already know all that scratch
Thanks as usual.

Any reason? is it justified or is it just because you are against billion dollar organisations?

I must say that I'm surprised that it would bring up Telstra...

Perhaps you didn't have it set to sort out the good results first, because Telstra and Optus are the WORST broadband companies in the country.

They have a LOT of hidden charges, and are generally the most expensive and least reliable providers out there.

They were the only 2 companies that came up the first time then the next time only the telstra plan came up, maybe it's because im asking for fast download and upload speeds.
I don't really know was only thinking Telstra for fox, phone and broadband then i would get a better deal.

I have been on telstra cable for about 8 years and for the past 3-4 it has been very very reliable, and in the past 18months has picked up quite a bit fo speed.

I do get 20% discount so that helps. The one thing I don't like is they count upload as well as download in their 12GB limit...but atleast it is shaped and I dont get charged extra.

I also don't have much choice. Telstra is the only cable and the phone lines in the area have poor signal, my house is on line share and not copper pair, hence even more bandwidth restriction. When i first moved in (years back) and was one dialup I could not get 50K and the line would only give me 26.5K...Oh, and wireless...well, for 5 houses in any direction around me are in a blackspot, so that last costly option is also out.

Sorry, slipped into ubergeek mode for a minute. afro

just remember that you will get better speed connected directly to the cable modem, than thru a wireless router.

Ha ha im only not up on who the best server is and what the best deals are, im aware how it all works, You are mistaking me with my father i think. Smile
Speedtest is alright i have been running it for the last 3 weeks every day at least twice a day for 3 tests (to take an average) the reason is so i can get out of my virgin contract without paying if i can prove my service has droped off then they can't say no.

Have to say, my iinet connection has been great ever since i got it. I'm lucky that I got in before they dropped a couple of gig from their plans, but i still think they're pretty good value.
