Figure stores in the U.S

Post by Fresh on Sun Mar 09, 2014 10:10 am

Hey now,

Heading to the States for the first time for Wrestlemania and am hoping to do some toy shopping whilst there.
Obviously there's Toys R Us and Wallmart but are there other recommendations?
I'm into a wide array of stuff from vintage Star Wars and MOTU to Marvel Legends and Hot Toys.
Will be staying in on Hollywood blvd in LA then heading to New Orleans and then New York.
Won't have access to a car so will be on foot or cabbing/bus/training.

Any tips/advice would be appreciated

Cheers!

I hear that Target over there is good for finding Marvel Legends.

That is awesome!

A few youtubers I follow visit this massive toys and collectibles warehouse called Frank and Son Collectible Show. They are only open on Wednesdays and Saturdays though.

Here is the address: 19649 San Jose Ave, Industry, CA 91748, United States. According to maps it's about half an hour away from Hollywood Blvd. There are a few videos on youtube about Frank and Son. With 200 sellers under the one roof, you could probably find everything you want Smile

TheGoodDr joined me for a month while I was off on a 6-month backpacking sabbatical around North America back in 2010.
We wandered around Chicago, New York, New Jersey and Detroit in search of plastic grails and found that:

- Target, Walmart and Toys R Us to be the best spots. Their 'super' Targets, which are combination of Targets and Woolworths are amazing.
- Kmarts and Big Ws don't rate highly over there and didn't stock much.
- We basically used Google Maps and the official Target etc websites to confirm store locations and hours.
- Hiring a car even if it's for one or two full days of toy hunting would be your best bet otherwise you'll need to use public transport and in some case public transport is terrible. If you do hire a car...don't forget to pay road toll LOL
- Be prepared to head out into some odd locations as well as meet some interesting people. Most of the Targets etc will be located next to malls and these are generally out in the suburbs.
- If you're lucky, some smaller conventions might be running while you're in town - check http://www.conventionscene.com/.
- If you do hit a convention, do your shopping on the last day as vendors tend to slash their prices to save them hauling stuff back.
- If you have long hair and a beard, be prepared to be called Jesus by every panhandler you bump into. Just ask TheGoodDr.
- Check local comic shops if you can. You may not find want you're after but you will stumble across other things.
- Post your haul back to Australia if you're worried about luggage limits.

And yeah, be sure to check the final destination of any trains or buses you catch. At one point in Chicago Bolo and I thought we were on our way to a Target store, but somehow ended up at a domestic airport. This resulted in us getting stuck with a none-to-happy cab driver who was pissed at having to drop us off at the said Target which was something like a five min cab ride.

I've seen a lot of US toy collectors on Instagram find some decent finds at Frank and Sons. Info here: http://www.frankandsonshow.net/

Awesome! Thanks for the replies.
Looks like Frank and Sons is a must visit.
It's been so hard trying to not buy toys in the lead up to the trip lol

Wrestlemania will be cool and I'm super excited to see the Ultimate Warrior get inducted into the Hall Of Fame as he was my fave as a kid.
I'm also going the Wrestlecon where Piper, Jake Roberts, the Hart Foundation, demolition etc will be appearing. Almost looking forward to that more than Mania itself

L.A. is a nightmare to get around if you don't have a car. It's seriously not worth it. You can expect to take 2 hours to do something that takes 25 mins in a car.

I was there in 2011 with some mates and we Googled comic and toy shops. Planned a route, hired a car and nailed them all in one day. There's a crap load in Anaheim, including one that is filled with vintage stuff.

Driving is piss easy because of their massive freeway system. A GPS will do all the work for you. You can get an international driver's license for about $50.

Trust me, rent a car.
