Picked up little big planet on thursday. Seems quite fun at the moment, controls are a bit floaty, but have been enjoying co-op with the wife. Anyone else playing this?

MK vs DC, a good fun game, managed to trade as not worth the $119 price tag, better to wait than pay that, but i had low expectations and they were more than met, very enjoyable!!

About two thirds through the songs in Rock Star, stuck on Enter Sandman. The sound seemed pretty flat until I went through the menu system and the game defaults to stereo not Dolby Digital. Huge difference in sound once I made the switch. Why on earth they default to stereo is baffling.

Re: What are you playing at the moment?

Post by Shocka on Sun Nov 23, 2008 12:58 pm

I'm a GIGANTIC fan of both Rock Band and Guitar Hero, but I've got to say that I'm a Rock Band supporter through-and-through. Played every Guitar Hero game (including Rock the 80's and Aerosmith *shudder*) and imported Rock Band months before it hit here, and now, having picked up Guitar Hero World Tour on the first day and about to import Rock Band 2, I'm really disappointed in World Tour.

Even though I generally prefer the Guitar Hero instruments, I much prefer the Rock Band drumkit over the Guitar Hero one - although it feels less like playing real drums, I've had a lot of problems with the sensitivity of the kick pedal and issues with every pad of the World Tour kit. This compounds with the difficulty - Rock Band has a good levelling for hardcore players like myself as well as newcomers, perfect for when you have a bunch of people over or for when you're having a party and some people want to have a shot at it. But Guitar Hero World Tour carries on the series' insane difficulty and has zero learning curve (the "Beginning" drums for World Tour is something south of retarded) and is either too easy or too hard for newcomers, rendering it unfun.

Rock Band and Guitar Hero World Tour both lack a required "No Fail" mode, that Rock Band 2 now has, bless 'em, but I'm mortified and pissed off the World Tour, with it's punishing difficulty, simply does not. Punishment for failing a song means everyone fails, and needs to start again, and this happens all the time. Additionally, although World Tour has a great set list, I much prefer the downloadable content for Rock Band, with which - even without Rock Band 2 - I have nearly 200 songs, most of which I love. Even songs that aren't great can still be fun to play thanks to the excellent note charts, of which Harmonix are pro.

That's not to say Guitar Hero World Tour is a bad game, frustrating difficulty aside - it's still great, but it's not the same awesome as Rock Band. Complaints that Guitar Hero are just ripping off World Tour are unfair, I feel, when the vocals on World Tour are borderline impossible (NO ONE can get 100% singing in a World Tour song - it can't be done, which is just petty). And then there's all the other issues. Rock Band, though. One of the best games ever made. Love it. Love it love it love it.

Yesterday, whilst conducting a LAN in North Sydney, I got my first taste of Mirror's Edge.
I won't have an Xbox 360 in my hands until Christmas (I have no other platform it is available on...and worth playing on) and I'm already having withdrawal symptoms for this game. o_o

Re: What are you playing at the moment?

Post by Shocka on Sun Nov 23, 2008 3:43 pm

Trust me, when you get the thing in your hands those symptoms wont last. I've played through half of the game and I'm well and truly sick of it - the initial kick from the gameplay runs out when you realise that the entire game is exactly the same, with little variety in situation or setting, and it quickly becomes routine and redundant. The combat controls are also awful, and every combat situation seems to rely more on luck than actual skill.

The storytelling is awful, as is the story - rote and uninteresting, doesn't do anything new or engaging. For some reason I kept thinking of Half-Life 2 while I was playing, possibly because that game is the antithesis to Mirror's Edge - although it doesn't do anything new gameplay wise, you're still running and gunning, but somehow it manages to tell a new story in a new way and keep what you're doing interesting even though the gameplay is all very similar, plus every location is entirely different - every location in Mirror's Edge is freaking identical. Also, combat in Half-Life 2 is a joy, combat in Mirror's Edge is luck based. Actually, a lot of Mirror's Edge is luck based, in that you're often punished for doing something wrong when you have no idea what the hell it was that you did wrong but eventually you get whatever-it-wants correctly, with no idea what you did differently, and it lets you play on. God, nothing is more annoying that being punished in a game for no reason - that is, failing a section for something that isn't your fault.

Blah blah blah, lots of words. Now that I've ditched Mirror's Edge, I've also just finished the surprisingly engaging Silent Hill 0rigins (the final third of that game has some of the most disturbing stuff I've ever seen in a game ever, a pleasant - and horrifying - surprise after a lackluster first third) and have been messing around with Silent Hill Homecoming and also Gears of War 2. As always, I'm still playing both Rock Band and Guitar Hero World Tour, because I love my music games.

And let's not forget Left 4 Dead on PC. Hell yeah. This is a must own for everyone with a good rig and a fast connection - amazingly fun zombie-annihalating cooperative entertainment. Bugger this, I'm going to go play that now.

Me finding a video game I enjoy is something of a pain in the rear. My game likes make little sense when compared to each other and often I dislike games that most people enjoy (and the other way around). I didn't like Left4Dead, if that tells you anything. I'll still be buying Mirror's Edge when I get a 360. I'm not enough of a sit down and play for hours on end person for it to really matter how repetitive it may get.
