Does anyone in Melbourne know of any free shower/bathroom facilities?

Post by DroothR on Wed Mar 06, 2013 10:30 am

Hey all, I wont bore you with the details, but long story short, I was laid off from my job just after Xmas, and if I don't get another fulltime job by the end of the month I'll be living in my car.

Knowing that this is likely, I need to start planning. Starting with the most important detail...

Does anyone in Melbourne know of where a person might be able to get access to a shower/bathroom for free?

Sorry to hear about your predicament dude and hope something turns up for you.

If you have a smart phone / internet connection you might want to try an app called wc finder, it lists all the public toilets around you (although they are added by users so maybe inaccurate and it would rely on a 3G connection). I guess shopping centres and restaurants have bathrooms too, showers might be a bit tricky.

If you are near the city you can sometimes get away with going into office blocks as they have toilets on each floor sometimes in a lobby style area before reception.

Boarding houses are also a cheap option if you have some money, although I wouldn't leave any of your stuff there as my friend had many experiences of stuff being stolen.

Unfortunately I've been living in a boarding house for the last 6 months already. Without a job, I can't afford rent period, and I've only enough savings left to hold out for a few more weeks.

Toilets are no issue, bur finding a place to bathe/clean myself each day is something I'll need to find.

*Being* homeless is one thing, smelling homeless is quite another, and something I'd like to avoid.

Have you tried recruitment agencies like Cox and Purtell, Hays, Michael Page and etc, to help you find any job?

I am sorry to hear about your situation...hope things would turn around quickly.

Am currently signed up with 2 agencies for day work, but received zero calls so far.

I would suggest to call them back and make a follow-up but also tell them about your situation. In my experience from it, I was in a similar situation with you where I was desperate for a job. I had to follow them up...to get an answer back from them .

I can't help you much but Cox Purtell (small recuitment agency) is a good one here is there number 03 9670 5005 (Melbourne Branch) .

Can you stay at your parent's house or friend or inlaws or brothers/ sisters or family for awhile, until you get a new job?

No, parents/best friend live on the other side of the state, and I can't leave the area where my daughter lives.

Edit: Just looked up Cox Purtell. They don't cater to someone like me.

The only immediately marketable areas I can expect to get work in the short term are in warehousing/packing type positions.

bloody hell, droothr. Just looked this up: http://www.melbourne.homeless.org.au/just-arrived.html

This indicates shower facilities in a couple of places.

Hope things get better for you soon! What about public pools? I know they charge a fee to enter but they have shower facilities and locker storage, might be an idea when all else fails.

I just received a phonecall from my best friend, who has offered to lend me enough money to last me one more month of rent, meaning I now have until the end of April to land stable employment. =')

Thank you to Pixo & Rhi! Great resources! Hopefully with my new extension, I wont need to follow them up. Wink

I'd suggest trying with the big companies like Coke/Coles/ Woolies.....don't think they ever really advertise that much but they have large warehouses and thus a need for large numbers of staff.......and are places where you can actually climb the ladder as opposed to the small warehouses where I used to work....ie 10 staff, one supervisor.

Hope things turn around for ya

I can't offer much, but I'd be happy to help advice on CVs/Resumes, job apps and interviews, etc.
