Skylanders - Does anyone collect/play it?

Post by DroothR on Mon Jan 14, 2013 3:40 pm

My mother is evil. silent

She bought my step-son the Skylanders game on Wii for his birthday in October.

Then for Xmas, not only did she buy him some of the expansion ("Adventure") packs, she bought everyone in the family a character each, so we could all play with him, and use our unique characters to help the young lad through the game.

In short, my Ma bought me the Skylander character Drobot, and a JB Hifi giftcard (which coincidentally is exactly enough to buy Skylanders for myself). tongue

Then when Kmart clearanced the characters for $5 a piece this week, I ended up doing this:

I don't even own the game (nor have I yet had time to play it with my boy), and now I'm buying them!!! pale

Question Does anyone else collect/play?

Now I have Spyro's Adventure and:

Magic: Spyro
Tech: Trigger Happy, Drobot
Water: Gill Grunt
Air: Warnado
Earth: Prism Break
Life: Camo, Stealth Elf

I figure that if I can get all of the Adventure Packs, I'll then have at least one of each element.

P.S. It turns out that the figures' NFC range is great enough that they work on the portal while remaining MOC. Wink

I got the game to play with my nephews when they visit. I was out hunting down all the characters as they came out in waves, I even managed to pick up a gold Flameslinger. It's a great game but definitely for young players.
My fav is Hex Cool

I hate this game, I have a hard time justifying $15 for dlc but this is clever marketing to kids, the first skylanders game ended up costing about $500 with all the expansion packs and figures and now the second series is out it's on again, my youngest son is nuts for it

Mwahahahaha I completely understand. If the figures were actually toys, that did ANYTHING, had articulation or whatever, I'd be inclined to get them all - as it is, I'm okay with just the starter kit and a couple of odd extras.

True, but they're still not "toys" per se, just little collectables that aren't even very durable - you can't "play" with them outside of the Skylanders game, and I think that's a bummer. If kids could play with these "toys" with their other toys, like, think Spyro attacking some Castle Lego, then play with them in the video game as well, it'd be win-win!

These where my toy of the year last year.

There a very cleaver idea using some under used technology with an under used former console mascot. Spyro was a Sony only creation at one point. (It not the first use RFID in a game or a console. Mattel put out a console called Hyperscan that uses the exact same tech except in cards in a under powered console and it bombed.)

Hemish pointed out that it quite evil as it just DLC hidden in a plastic collectible. Which is the beauty of it as humans don't like buying things we can't touch or feel. But dam it a great idea marketing wise, also that they can be used across all console that support it.

They done about half a billion in sales. I can see it only getting bigger. Curse them to hell. (Although I also expect several copy cats coming soon. Pokemon being a franchise that could easily do it.) I amagen in 5-10 years time me finding these by the 100 in thrift shops and fleamarkets (Kind of like Zhu Zhu now)

My brother and I have collected all of the series 1 characters except for Dark Spyro and the variants. It was fun tracking them down. Whamshell was probably the hardest one to find, he's not sold in 3 packs.
It really does end up costing you a lot. We're avoiding the series 2 re-releases. All you really get is a different pose and an extra upgrade/power for each character. We've only picked up the new characters and the giants.
The games are fairly easy. I like the idea of the characters saving data and allowing you to play on another person's portal no matter what console they have.

I'm interested to see how Disney's Infinity game matches up against Skylanders.

Well, if they figures had actual DLC, that'd be one thing, but they don't.

100% of the game is on disc. The figures only unlock the content.

On top of that, locally we're paying more than twice what the prices are in the USA.

I do like that the memory on each figure saves it's stats and details though. Being able to level up and customise a character on my Xbox 360 game, then take it over to play with my step-son on his Wii is really awesome. Very Happy

If Kmart and Target weren't clearing all of the first game's figures for $5-$7, I wouldn't have even considered getting the game.

That said, I now have 5 more, making my total...

Magic: Spyro
Tech: Trigger Happy, Drobot
Water: Gill Grunt
Air: Warnado
Earth: Bash, Dino-Rang, Prism Break
Life: Camo, Stealth Elf
Fire: Eruptor, Ignitor
Undead: Chop Chop
