Which DC to collect?

Post by sher1888 on Tue Nov 27, 2012 12:00 pm

I am not much of a DC fan as I am a Marvel fanatic When comes to DC ,I am into specific characters such as Justice league, Batman, Sup and Green Latern. I am Batman and Sup fan but do not know which figurines represents the comic counterparts with villians to buy any advice will do.

In summary, DCUC figures cheaply from Chinese Ebay sellers.

Tricky question. Do you like "classic" or "new 52"? If you're after the "new 52" then you can build a collection from the ground up as they're only being released now (both in DC Direct and DCUC). Since you like Marvel Legends, I'm guessing the DC Direct statues won't appeal to you, so DCUC will be your main focus. I think "new 52" Batman, Superman and Batgirl are now available from Ebay sellers located in China for a cheap price. The "new52" Wonder Woman and Hawkman should follow shortly and I'm pretty sure at least one or two other "new 52" versions have been confirmed.

If you like the "classics", then you should be able to build the Justice League, except for Wonder Woman, from Ebay sellers in China for under $10.00 per figure, along with the "main" villains.

Of course, you may also consider the "Movie Masters" figures, especially with Man of Steel being released next year and a potential "Justice League" movie in 2015. Do you like the DC movies, particularly the Batman trilogy and Green Lantern?

Both Mattel and DC Direct are also meant to be doing figures based on the new "Injustice" video game. The characters have some interesting designs which are somewhat similar to the Batman Arkham Asylum/City designs.

I would like classics rather than new 52...I like the DC movies better than Marvel as they are more mature and rather than Marvel going Disney. I love Arkham Asylum game and figurines but they are way too expensive ($30 a piece)...but the selection of characters great looking for something similar but more comic accurate from the 80's to 90's.

Personally, I find the DCUC very generic. The articulation is slightly better than most DC Collectibles (formerly DC Direct) stuff, but the overuse of the same bucks make them quite bland. There are some hits, but you need to weed them out.

DCC, despite lesser articulation, have a lot better sculpts (for the most part). You just need to find the right ones. I've mainly got core characters from DCC (culled down from a more expansive collection a few years ago) so if you're after a particular character, I'm more than happy to offer further suggestions.

And whether you go DCUC or DCC, there's going to some hits and misses in both lines. I find that a mixture of the two can provide you with a great collection. For example, some of the DCUC Collect & Connect figures are perfect (like Darkseid and Bane) compared to their DCC offerings. I'm still chasing the C&C Bane, but it's around a hundy to get. Most other characters (Supes, Bats, WW, Flash, GL, Joker, Penguin, Catwoman, Riddler, Hawkman and Girl among a few others) I much prefer the DCC versions (often ones that are a number of years old, as well).

Still waiting on a perfect Lex Luthor, Poison Ivy and a few other characters, though.

So its called DC Classics what brand?

I would like to get Batman similar to classic looking style e.g. Kenner's Batman Animated Series but not cartoonish looking.

I am very broad with one type of character and villains not like Marvel where they are mostly in teams...I guess Toybiz did really a great job... Vehicles wise for Bat, I got them all when I was a kid except the modern ones.

List:
Batman (Black and grey or Blue and grey costume)
Bane
Penguin
Mad Hatter
Ivy
Catwoman
Robin
Batgirl
Freeze
Clayface
Man Bat
Killer Croc
Scarecrow
Tal Al Ghul
Officer Gordon
Joker
Riddler

I'm hoping to collect the Arkham figures. It seems DCC will be the one for that as the character selection is really good.

I love good articulation, but the DCC's seem ok to me in that regard. Better than what some companies call an 'action figure' when they have barely any movement at all.

They certainly aren't as fun as the DCUC's though.

Both Mattel & DCC have a good selection of characters under their belt. I guess it comes down to whichever toys you prefer the look of.

I don't own many of them yet, but I consider the DCC Alex Ross figures to be my ultimate versions of the Justice League crew.

Re: Which DC to collect?

There's basically two manufacturers of DC character figures.

Mattel makes DC Universe Classics (shortened to DCUC). They also include legacy lines prior to them, like DC Superheroes and there was also a Batman line before that. They release some at retail now (in the US, rarely here) and have started doing a continuation of the line via subscription on their Mattycollector.com website.

The other manufacturer is DC themselves, via their DC Collectibles brand (up until very recently, was known was DC Direct for over a decade). They release a variety of lines with that brand, so packaging is very different. Right now, they mainly release Arkham City figures and are starting to do New 52 figures. They are mainly available from your LCS, but finding older figures is hard and often eBay prices are high.

As for my preferences for the characters you listed, see below. Have included a picture and the DC Direct/Collectibles line they are from (check out this website http://www.joeacevedo.com/docs/figurezone/dcdactionfigures2012.htm for other DC Direct figures and make up your own mind, though):

Batman (Black and grey or Blue and grey costume): I currently use this one http://www.joeacevedo.com/images/figurezone/dcdfigures/dcdbatmanson_batman.jpg (Batman & Sons)
Bane: Definitely the DCUC C&C version, otherwise there's pretty much only this one http://www.joeacevedo.com/images/figurezone/dcdfigures/dcdbaneknightfall.jpg (Knightfall)
Penguin: http://www.joeacevedo.com/images/figurezone/dcdfigures/dcdpenguin_brg.jpg (Secret Files: Batman Rogues Gallery)
Mad Hatter: http://www.joeacevedo.com/images/figurezone/dcdfigures/dcd_longhalloween.jpg (The Long Halloween)
Ivy: No favourite here, but this one might be good http://www.joeacevedo.com/images/figurezone/dcdfigures/dcdbrg_poisonivy.jpg (Secret Files 3: Rogues Gallery 2)
Catwoman: http://www.joeacevedo.com/images/figurezone/dcdfigures/dcdcatwoman_hush2.jpg( Hush series 2)
Robin: http://www.joeacevedo.com/images/figurezone/dcdfigures/dcdrobin.jpg (Teen Titans series 1)
Batgirl: http://www.joeacevedo.com/images/figurezone/dcdfigures/dcdbatgirljoker.jpg (Silver Age Batgirl & Joker set)
Freeze: http://www.joeacevedo.com/images/figurezone/dcdfigures/dcdac2dlx-mrfreeze.jpg (Arkham City Deluxe)
Clayface: There's been no DCC/DCD release. There was a DCUC (may have been DC Superheroes) 2 pack by Mattel that features pretty much the only Clayface.
Man Bat: http://www.joeacevedo.com/images/figurezone/dcdfigures/dcdmanbat_brg.jpg (Secret Files: Batman Rogues Gallery)
Killer Croc: http://www.joeacevedo.com/images/figurezone/dcdfigures/dcdkillercroc_brg.jpg (Secret Files: Batman Rogues Gallery)
Scarecrow: http://www.joeacevedo.com/images/figurezone/dcdfigures/dcdScarecrowhush.jpg (Hush series 3)
Tal Al Ghul: No release yet, Arkham City series 3 will have her (looks week). For her father, Ra's Al Ghul, I would recommend http://www.joeacevedo.com/images/figurezone/dcdfigures/dcdtrinity_rasalghul.jpg (Trinity)
Officer Gordon: http://www.joeacevedo.com/images/figurezone/dcdfigures/dcdCommishGordon.jpg (Hush series 3)
Joker: http://www.joeacevedo.com/images/figurezone/dcdfigures/dcdbatgirljoker.jpg (Silver Age Batgirl & Joker set)
Riddler: http://www.joeacevedo.com/images/figurezone/dcdfigures/dcdriddler_hush2.jpg (Hush series 2)

Thanks Jor-El , your links really help me on what I wanted on the Batman. I would probably buy them once a month because I would mostly buy them from the states. They are the types of appearances that I loved.

I think , I am just going to start DC from now on since I have most of the ML nowadays missing only three BAFs: Nemesis ,Brood Queen, and Arnim Zola. Also some figures such as the two packs and figures that are not worth getting e.g. x-23.Hopefully is not expensive as Dragonman,Cross-bones and Ares (currently in mail do not know why my seller shipped it via first class Sad).

I just realised DCUC is harder to collect than Marvel as in ebay as it is rare. Marvel may be more expensive but DCUC is harder to find.In the current market you cannot find a BAF Bane...

I'm DCUC all the way. They might reuse a lot of the same parts but it makes for a uniform look to the universe. DCD was all over the place. The articulation is significantly better too.

BAF Bane does pop up. Usually around a hundy though, which sucks. Might be better once TDKR phase dies down.

You know what also sucks? The Movie Masters Batpod goes for insane amounts after they were dirt cheap for ages. TDKR has basically skyrocketed interest for Batman stuff this year.

I wonder if Superman stuff will skyrocket with MOS film coming out next year...

I think it would ,the two pack black widow and winter soldier went up to $144 value and its like Bane extremely rare. The Dcuc Bane went up to $140 and just got him yesterday + free shipping for $60.I got lucky to get those figures $80 less when the Avengers movie came out. I fell in love with DC when I got my first ones yesterday but hard to collect even at ebay but the prices are reasonable compared to marvel.

It's pretty close. I was comparing The Commisioner Gordon figure to some DCUC and their shoulders were very close. Huntress is the same height as Powergirl.

I have a spare set of Series 1 and 2 still M.I.B if you're interested?
