Please explain - Buffy

Post by The Dr Of Style on Tue Apr 29, 2008 7:06 pm

OK I'm sure I'l ruffle a few feathers (esp with TST sorry Surprised ) but hey...checked out the top 100 comics for feb list in previews and Buffy#11 came in at 14....That really surprised me... just wondering what the appeal is with the whole franchise....for me the tv show seemed like a slightly more adult version of Power rangers, as in same basic story each week, insert bad guy A, with powers/evil plan then a solution etc and seemed to come from (xena, hercules) and spawn a few other shows which were basically the same (angel, charmed)...maybe thats why people liked it...I just missed the boat...I suppose that explains the twenty versions of law & order/csi etc...or is it a more female friendly title?....anyway I'm far from innocent with my watching/reading choices but I was just surprised the comic sold so well.

For me, it was the characters and how they interacted with each other, plus I loved the dialogue and subtle nods to the geek community, e.g. Spike threatening to break a missile firing Boba Fett figure. You really need to watch it season by season. I initially never liked Buffy until I watched a bunch of episodes back to back.

Spike: Examine my chip or else Mr. Fett here is the first to die.

Jonathan: Hey! All - All right. Let's not - Let's not not do anything crazy here.

Andrew Wells: That's a limited edition, 1979 mint condition Boba Fett.

Have to say it was the same for me as Bolo.
The comics are ok, but the TV show is definitely where it's at. They all have the best interactions, really funny lines and just really fit well together.
There are larger themes in each season;
i.e. Season 1 - Don't want to be a slayer
Season 2 - Angel
Season 3 - Faith
And so on.

I missed the boat as I didn't actually start watching it until 2006.

Although Angel is the spin off, it's not really that much like Buffy. The general lay out to the show is, but everything else that mixes in to make it the show it is - completely different. You know, minus the guest appearances of Buffy stars.

I think it just comes down to needing to get past the format of the show and just enjoy the story and characters over all.

BTW, not upset, it is your opinion after all Smile

I never got into it although my sister was a big fan and i'd hear her laughing out each ?Tuesday night when it was on. I think it falls quite easily into one of those shows, like most fantasy/sci-fi shows, people either had to watch or they never watched.

You've got to be edit kidding me.

Joss Whedon and Buffy edit redefined TV. It was one of the first truly intelligent shows to tackle a smart subtext alongside onscreen action, dealing with intriguing real-life problems as an adolescent metaphor that group up as the show grew up, and was also shot in a cinematic format, the way that most shows are nowadays. In fact, you jerks, Buffy writers went on to work on and write most of the top shows on TV nowadays - Battlestar Galactica, Lost, 24, to name a few.

Power Rangers? Xena? Charmed? You edit joking? edit Show some respect. Buffy (and also Angel, hell, pretty much anything Joss has ever touched) is studied in universities across the world; there's never been anything in TV close to it in terms of academic popularity, even masterpieces like Twin Peaks. Even HBO, now the Gold Standard in Television with The Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood, Six Feet Under, has acknowledged the progress made by Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the works of Joss and his talented team of writers/filmmakers. If you aren't familiar with it, it's well worth taking a look at. It evolves beyond the first season and maintains an EXTREMELY strong fanbase today - as well as continuing in the canononical Season 8 comic book series - because it's so smart, so clever, with real characters, not 3D-Charmed style crap, with intelligent plots that are actually applicable and balanced and fascinating.

I was just outlining the (definately supeficial) reasons I didn't ever watch it and then asked why it was so popular....more so in comic book sales was my interest as I would have thought X-Files comics and the like were never near the top 10 in sellers.... I guess I got my "dealing with intriguing real-life problems as an adolescent metaphor that group up as the show grew up" from Degrassi & Beverly Hills 90210

Except those shows were craparse; they're not about subtext as much as they're about text, lovely little morality plays with everything tied up nicely and spelled out at the end as a lesson for all, and they lack the cinematic quality that made Buffy what it was and what TV is today. Proper orchestral score, richly developed realistic characters with smart ongoing arcs and serious repercussions, so on so on.

Well, those shows were products of their time...tv drama now has much higher budgets attached and consequently much higher production values, in relative terms.

Jeez. I'm a massive Buffy fan but at least read what he was asking. He wasn't saying that it was crap, he just didn't understand it's popularity.
The series is very heavily disguised as just another teen show. This is what I thought when I began watching it. I started for superficial reasons, as a fan of Eliza Dushku. But it developed into a better understanding and appreciation.

Nobody here accused Buffy as being complete rubbish, he just wanted to understand more.

How about next time you encourage people to watch the show instead of shouting down an innocent question?

Actually, the average episode of Buffy had a MUCH lower budget than an episode of 90210; the only difference was a lack of talent or scope. They were making crap to shovel into the gullets of their audience, and that was it, so why do anything intelligent or lasting?

Oh I get it. I present you with a valid argument and you have to crap-talk your way out of it? Nice work.
Also, nice work in being a lurking fool from a previous board.

I remember really liking the show when it first came on tv. Unfortunately I was put off by a bunch of militant hardcore watchers at uni and stopped watching. Might pick some of it up again.
