Looking forward to this a lot. Some great casting (Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba) and probably the first movie I'll actually be excited to see in 3D.

I haven't watched any trailer, TV spot, or online video promoting Prometheus released in the last month, and am hoping to be able to continue doing so until I get to see the film.

Smile

...which I think is the first time in my life that I've had the willpower to avoid ALL promotional material for a film I'm this excited for. Shocked

I saw it Wednesday night. I thought it was fantastic - very well done adult sci fi.

Not aperfect movie by any means, however beautifully shot, well paced and very scary.

My only criticism is that some of the characters do some VERY dumb things that no intelligent person would do.

My Prometheus review:

Amateurly written, filled with hollow, inhuman characters, pointless contrivances, and ultimately uneventful. It blows its one good concept in the first 5 minutes, and goes virtually nowhere from there. A disappointment. - 6/10

I do some reviews and other work for Sci-Fi & Squeam. Cool

Here's a review addendum I added:

... the characters don't act at all like humans, none of the introduced "organic material" follows any sort of logic or coherence, and the majority of character actions, re-actions, and in-film events happen "just because". Not because it makes any sense, nor because it equates to anything.

It is a film made with a "Michael Bay" mentality. Things happen merely because the director thought it would be "cool", not because it means anything or leads anywhere specific. Beyond the open scene, the audience gains nothing other than a visual and aural experience that offers a multitude of questions, and not only answers none, but occasionally negates a number of its own (eventually) ineffectual propositions, rendering the fantastic base premise moot.

I could write an entire book detailing how poorly written the film was, and how the good set-ups were woefully squandered, but I have 4 days to pack all of my possessions before I put it in starage and move, so I've not the time to properly disect the film this week.

Exclamation To your point though, I'd give it only "1 thumb up" overall.

If you want to watch a film about the quest for knowledge of the origin of life on Earth, and any exploration of the theological issues inherent with such a topic (as the trailers and opening scenes would lead one to expect), then you'll be disappointed, as that's quickly brushed aside, and none of it is resolved.

If you simply want to watch random slimy things, and people dying on screen in a fancy huge-budget environment, then yeah, check it out.

Geez... I thought it was JUST a tentpole demographic movie directed by Ridley Scott. It's kinda funny you said you had tried to dodge all media hype about this movie but came on here to give an in depth review of it, thus giving everyone else no warning or chance to dodge your review on here. Movie reviews are useless at best IMO. I am a projectionist and will be showing Prometheus tonight but somehow feel a little of the mystique for this movie has been lost with your review. It's filled with big words though.

Just saw it and thought it wasn't that bad at all... to be honest it is the best thing Ridley Scott has done in a while. There are things in it that do seem like glaring plotholes but I think not everything had been revealed and not everything was served to the audience in a traditional movie-going way.

Spoiler:
The title of the movie is a HUGE part of the overall experience and an integral part of the story as a whole IMO. Yes,the derrelict ship isn't set on the exact location as in Alien and yes, the "engineer/space jockey dude" didn't die in his chair as in Alien but rather in Vickers quarters but like I said before I don't think everything was meant to be revealed in such a straight forward way... it's meant to raise more questions than it answers. I find it quite interesting that no one has brought up the possibility of the "engineer/space jockey dude" in the chair not actually being a space jockey at all but rather a surviving human character inside his space suit (impregnated with a queen xenomorph) somehow to be revealed in a sequel. It would explain the eggs everywhere to be found in the original Alien and the whole idea of Weyland/Yutani knowing of the xenomorphs existance thus trying to use them as biological warfare. Not to mention the original distress signal. A possible Weyland/Yutani cover-up to pretend that LV-233 did not exist and rename it LV-426... and inhabit it with a terraforming colony. In no way shape or form did I think it was "Bay-ish" at all.

At the risk of being beaten by fanboys Rolling Eyes , I thought it was a hell of a lot smarter than the novelty that was "The Avengers".

Saw tonight. Really enjoyed it.

Spoiler:
It was obvious to me that this is not the same planet sending the distress signal in Alien. I think those expecting a direct tie in are probably walking away disappointed. Definitely excited to see where Scott progresses the story to. Felt it very much made sense storywise and that it is but a drop of what we can perhaps expect to see. To quote David "big things come from small beginnings". An apt description of the film. 8/10 for mine. Loved the c-section scene, and told my wife she can no longer complain about having 2... Razz
