ah cool, they look ok, but still looking forward to something new with enemies this time !

The TMNT comiquettes I had to get the one that had the switch out bandanas, cuz i liked the separate colours as well, but its cool to have em original style as well every so often =-)

I spose the Shredder looks like he could be fun. Not as nice as Neca's ofcourse. Hopefully the Foot Soldier ends up with more articulation...not to mention the correct colours.

Re: Playmates TMNT Classics

Post by Artistix on Thu Apr 28, 2011 1:43 pm

So this is what ODBJBG over on Fwoosh had to say on the Neca/Playmates conversation:

Why did Neca ditch their TMNT line?

"NECA is a wonky company? The rushed, poorly planned black and white repaints along with repacks of Turtles in less desirable variations of accessories didn't sell through as well as NECA had hoped? NECA found it easier to produce cheaply made Twilight figures which sold much better, in comparison to costly TMNT figures with higher articulation? NECA's last ditch attempt to gage interest in the Turtles was a horribly planned April exclusive that didn't sell because everyone knew that April wouldn't sell or already couldn't find the Turtles thus had no use for April or didn't buy her because the writing was already on the wall?

Honestly, take your pick.

The only involvement that Playmates had with NECA was preventing them from getting into TRU. And while it's easy to blame that on Playmates, that was the deal from DAY ONE. Nothing ever changed. NECA knew when they got the license that they wouldn't be able to sell in TRU.

Talk to the guys at Mirage about their relationship with NECA. It was non-existent. You know NECA's running a bad operation when the folks at Mirage thought they were screwy.

Now NECA views TRU as it's main source of sales, and that's great and all... But they refuse to put TMNT back into production because of that. No TRU, no TMNT... But that's a NECA ideology. It's still not Playmates fault. NECA pushed through turds like the Batsus and the bobbleheads, they could have made more TMNT. They chose not to because the numbers weren't there.

The numbers weren't there, of course, because of NECA's own poor handling of the line. Originally the numbers WERE there... The NECA TMNT was one of the hottest sellers for NECA. Except NECA tried to make too much of a cash grab with the Turtles and burned out the fans with lame variants and repacks.

Even with the April release... They undercut their own business model. They mentioned a SDCC exclusive and said that sales of that would determine the future of the line. Then they put up pre-orders for a strange green variant and a much more desirable cartoon colored variant and told people they'd be released and in stores for $15... All the while expecting people to pay $20 for a blue version of the same figure. Then the blue version doesn't sell like gangbusters because half the audience is waiting for the regular release yellow version in stores and the other half can't find a frickin' NECA TMNT because it's been 2 years since they were released and every figure is long since sold out.

Unfortunately all of the issues with NECA's TMNT line fall squarely at the feet of NECA. They could re-release the four guys today and sell a ton of figures... But they don't, because somehow they're convinced they're not going to sell based on their own failed business practices. All the while fanboys have convinced themselves that it must be Playmates fault, despite the fact that Playmates didn't stop NECA from releasing Turtles and haven't made a Turtle since 2009 and all the while NECA has had the license to make anything relating to the comic TMNT that their heart's desired.

NECA held the TMNT license at the exact time that Playmates had no Turtles toys on the shelves. They could have been the only game in town selling TMNT figures... But they chose not to. It's easier to reconicle in your mind that Playmates has to be behind it somehow, because the truth is that NECA blundered the line from the day after the intial sucessful first releases.

I don't mean to rant. If you've got proof of something other than that, please share... But Playmates, NECA, Randy Falk and the guys at Mirage all have essentially said the same thing and it's never been that Playmates was the problem. Preventing them from getting in TRU, yes, but like I said, that was the deal from the word go. NECA blamed low sales (which were caused by their own dealings) for the reason that TMNT didn't get a wave 2."

Argh! I've died and gone to toy heaven:

http://toynewsi.com/index.php?itemid=18236

I'm incredibly happy with how the TMNT Classics figures look. I want them ALL and I want to see Classics versions of Splinter, Casey Jones, April, Shredder, Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady as a bare minimum!

It's going to be a long and painful wait until I have these figures in my hands. TMNT was my ultimate "toy line" when I was younger.

wow! these look amazing! great work from Playmates, surprisingly so! i look forward to some scale details, but the Classics ones look great, and the new animated ones are also pretty impressive.

This could end up being the 'Thundercats' of this years toyfair. Classic/new and every collector talking about it.

Re: Scale

I *think* the "Classic/1980 Series" figures are 6" scale, which means the TURTLES should be around 5" and the various humans like Casey Jones and Shredder (IF made/released) would be around 6".

I think the "New/2012 Series" figures are 4" scale.

That's based on the early reports/details from a TMNT fan convention many months ago.

Speaking of size, each Turtle will also vary from 4.25" to 4.75" to better represent the different brothers. No completely shared bodies here, folks!

10" doesn't phase me... kinda works with what I'm doing with my displays now. But it is a weird move... first Bandai with 8" TCs, then this. :/

The shell storage is kinda neat. Hopefully doesn't ugify the figures.

Re: Scale of Classics

I don't know. Did they look 10" in the video to anyone else? I thought they looked around 6", but my perceptions of scale are pretty crap.

Also, in the video, he was clearly talking about two different sets of figures. When they show the "shell storage" area it is a completely different figure based on the new 2012 cartoon series design (with brown knee and elbow pads, etc) as opposed to the "Classics" figures based on the 1980's cartoon series (with coloured knee and elbow pads).

The "shell storage" figures also had significantly less articulation.
