Catra

Catra - Jealous Beauty
Real Name: C’yra of D’riluth III

A disputed monarch from the Tri Solar System, C’yra joined the Horde Empire and was given a magical mask which granted her secret powers such as the ability to transform into a panther. She traveled with Horde Commander Kur to Eternia on his mission to ensure He-Ro was destroyed. There, along with the rest of the Horde army, she was caught up in the Great Wars and eventually banished to Despondos by King Grayskull. She remained with her leader throughout their banishment and was eventually promoted to Force Captain after Hordak’s step-daughter betrayed the Horde to the Etherian Rebellion. Catra’s jealousy of She-Ra has become her greatest weakness.

Notes from the Org:
'Tri Solar System' is a reference to New Adventures

From ToyGuru: "Hordak used the term "Step Daughter" as part of his system of keeping Adora under his control. Yes, technically she is "adopted" but that would have lead to her asking more questions... which he didn't want her doing. Better to make her think she was his daughter."

Another lame bio for an otherwise excellent figure.

Catra is 5,000 years old, once ruled an entire solar system, yet she was only promoted to Force Captain after Adora left to join the Great Rebellion?

And I still don't understand how the 5,000 years thing is meant to work. So, Hordak and his crew spent say 4,990 years wandering Despondos before they found Etheria and conquered it? Around 18 years before that, Hordak somehow obtain Adora?

Speaking of which, Adora as the child of Horde allies who were killed my members of the Great Rebellion and then adopted by Hordak is FAR EASIER to explain to Adora than her mother and father splitting up (did her father die, did they divorce, did he do a runner), her mother (who must have been something of a beauty or at least humanoid to have given birth to Adora) deciding to marry a pig-bat creature with technological enhancements and then disappearing (did she die, did she divorce Hordak and Hordak got custody, did she wake-up the morning after the wedding and realise what she had married) leaving Adora to be raised by her step-father.

And why is Catra jealous of She-Ra? Shouldn't she be jealous of Adora? Catra doesn't know that Adora is She-Ra.

Anyway, the cardback goes in the bin and the cool figure goes on the shelf. I guess that is all that matters.

Cheers.

It does raise a few questions.

Perhaps time is experienced differently is different parts of Despondos. What seemed like 5,000 years on Eternia or even Etheria may have seemed much shorter in the particular part of Despodos where Hordak & his crew were originally banished to by King Grayskull.

Adora being promoted to Force Captain after 18 years when the rest of the Horde members never got a shot (that we know of so far) is probably more a case of 'It's not what you know but who you know'. Granted Adora would have been quite capable. Catra should be thankful Adora switched sides really! Very Happy

In regards to Adora questioning Hordak, I recall in 'Secret of the Sword' whenever she asked questions that Hordak didn't want to answer, he had Shadow Weaver cloud her mind & tell her to forget it. So I'd imagine she was doing that all of Adora's life whenever she asked about that stuff.

It seems to me that Catra's bio went out of it's way to omit any mention of Shadow Weaver or her mind-control of Adora. I'm sure that will change if Mattel ever cough up the cash for the Filmation rights. Then Shadow Weaver will appear with sudden prominance in the Horde related bios.

Oh, for sure. You'd think if they get the opportunity to buy the rights for one character, it would be Shadow Weaver. She is Hordaks second in command...as far as it seemed on the show. She was very prominent in the series.

I viewed some footage from that C2E2 but I didn't hear them mention how to pronounce Catra's real name.

Sighra
Kighra
S-eyera
K-eyera
S-eara
K-eara??

I gather TG will tell us at some point. If fact I wouldn't mind hearing him run through a lot of those real names they gave them.

I like that they include the comb, but I think it should be JUST a comb.
Each PoP figure should come with a coloured comb to match their vintage figure.
Even as a hidden accessory… It'd be a nice nod to the 80's line.

Personally, I like the comb-weapons - when they're done well.

With She-Ra, she had an axe with some comb elements.

But with Catra, she has a comb with a whip extension.

If they can dial the "combness" back a little, so that future PoP figures come with weapons featuring a comb reference, then I'm all for it.

But if they're going to just do combs with weapons attached to them, then yes, I agree that it's perhaps not worth the effort.

Have we see a photo of Catra with the red mask "on" (as opposed to sitting on the top of her head)? That's not how I'm planning on displaying the figure, but I was just wondering since they seem to have avoided displaying Catra that way.

As for the comb-weapons, I like the idea and I think the execution on She-Ra's comb-axe was excellent, but the comb-whip is very lame. They just took a comb and added a whip to the end of it. I would have preferred if the "handle" had added teeth to it for the "comb" influence or perhaps if the last 1/3 of the length of the whip had "teeth".

I would have been happy with colour variations of the comb-axe with each of the female POP figures instead of bizarre designs like the comb-whip. But, Catra seems to look best with no weapons, so that's how I'll be displaying her.

Cheers.

I saw ToyGuru answer that in an interview video from Wondercon.

She can ONLY wear the red mask in the "tiara" style. It does not fit lower down.

Uh oh...duck & cover TG!!! Laughing

They might put a mask in a future accessory pack that will attach to the face.

I don't mind the comb additions, & whilst I am not a huge fan of Catra's whip/comb, it doesn't really bother me as I will displaying her with the sword in her right hand & her left hand in the raised claw pose. The whip will be going in the accessories bag.

Went on this afternoon to order Stratos and the GLUC wave. I ended up grabbing a Catra since most of the GLUC figures were sold out.

Unfortunately selected fast shipping instead of the slower option, so I'm now in the process of contacting Customer Service - there was no difference in price when I switched between the international shipping options, i.e. my shopping cart wasn't refreshing.

I wasn't home, so I attempted my first order on my phone, and it worked!

In fact, my order went through faster this time than I've ever been able to do a multi-item order on my PC at home. Shocked

In and out with 2 GL figures in about 5 minutes, with only one very brief refresh screen. Very Happy

I said that you don't hear of the Horder members who ignored catras commands because she cuts their damn heads off with her Hello Kitty sword! Twisted Evil
