The News Thread (aka "Toyguru says...")

Post by Sledge Hammer! on Fri Feb 25, 2011 4:46 am

Just thought a thread for posting the latest news and tidbits might be a decent idea for this board.

Anyway to start it off, a few snippets taken from the latest motu podcast with, who else, Toyguru...

There's going to be "huge" MOTU news at SDCC, apparently the biggest news yet. And it is not Shadow Weaver nor Filmation rights. It's "something fans have been waiting 30 years for" apparently.

The SDCC exclusive this year will be two different versions of a single release again, however (just?) the packaging and bios will be different between the convention and matty versions. Apparently the figure will be same, just posed differently in each release.

Action features are apparently not completely off limits, they're just expensive to do, and thus very restricted considering the limited tooling dollars the line has. Toyguru says that they could do them more often if the line was selling better, but it's not selling at the level that would require.

I reckon there will be a special auction for a one-off He-Man figure. You can buy Dolph Lundgren to pose in your toy room. May be more wooden and less articulated than any current MOTUC, but still.

Waiting 30 years for?

Marlena??

Though we already know they can make her...so that wouldn't be the biggest news (but would still be awesome news).

It's the whole 'biggest news yet' thing that gets me. That implies something really major, so I can't see any single character fitting that bill.

Then again maybe maybe biggest and huge are just wordplay doubletalk, and are in reference to scale. Perhaps lifesized models of the power swords and/or Skeletors staff? Or larger scale versions of He-Man and Skeletor?

I honestly have no idea on this one...

so according to wikipedia the mini comics started in late '81 (and the cartoon starting in '83) so it would have to be something from those early funny books is my guestimate (or at least something that dates back that far). I'm liking your idea about the life size replicas Sledge, I'd be all over that!

While full scale accessories would be cool, such things are out of the realms of some toy collectors (like myself). I'd like to see them but wouldn't buy them.

It would have to relate to the 6" toyline IMO.

Wouldn't be any major playsets since we've seen nearly everything previously with the exception of the Royal Palace....but I doubt many people have been waiting 30 years for that! & they would never do the Palace before Castle Grayskull.

From the mini comics Teela seemed to be the big news. I don't think I have seen the fans heavily backing anything else from the comics, so that might be a bit obscure for something people have wanted for 30 years.

All good ideas. I have none, so I'll just crap on everybody elses! Laughing

I just had another thought (that makes a whole two for today, yay me! Razz), how old is the minicomic that had the talking dragon Granymyr in it? That would be something that's big, never been made, and much fan wanted over the years...

A good possibility....& would be soooo awesome!

Note from above - He-man refused to cut down the tree (since it was alive), & in doing so gained Granamyr's respect.
Comic - http://old.he-man.org/primary_sects/comics/html/mini_comics/motu/comic_pages/00074690/00cover.shtml

ToyGuru - July 2009
Oh, we "could" do Granymyr since he appeared first in a min comic, but he would be very expensive to tool. We'll have to see how Battle Cat does first before considering larger items. And Cornboy is a huge fan of this character, so we know the Horsemen would do it right!"

A life-size Power Sword/The Sword of Power/The Sword of Grayskull/Sword of He would be cool to see.

It's not something I'd personally collect, but it is something fans have wanted for a long time and Mattel has produced Ghostbusters props, so perhaps they're expanding their prop making to MOTU as well.

Alternatively, I'll have a MOTUC figure based on She-Ra's initial design as He-Ra with brunette hair and a teeny-tiny bikini to give Battleground Teela a run for her money in the "Hottest Fictional Cartoon Woman of Eternia/Etheria Made Into a Plastic Play-thing".

Cheers.

According to Toyguru, the 2012 sub exclusive figure won't be another He-Man variant...

Apparently the two secret accessories are rumored to be:

A second motu character head for Man-E-Faces with faces that include He-Man, Skeletor, and and third, as yet unknown/undecided motu character, possibly Hordak.

A Sword for Megator, which could also be given to Tytus.

Keep in mind that this is strictly rumour material right now, and nothing has been confirmed (or denied) officially as of yet.

So they only have a limited amount of time to use those names before they have to pay for them again? Or they have them for good now?

They have been mentioning Sorceress since the very beginning in bio's, so the TM's must last several years atleast.

# How long does a trademark last?
A federally registered trademark continues indefinitely so long as the mark is being used in connection with the goods and/or services in the registration. To maintain a registration, an applicant will need to file various renewals documentation with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in addition to the continued use.

# How long does it take to federally register a trademark?
Timing can vary, and each application is unique. However, in many instances a U.S. federal registration can be obtained in about one year, so long as there are no major substantive refusals to the mark and so long as the mark is not opposed, the likelihood of which both items are reviewed in a trademarkability search.

So basically, once finalised, a trademark can be indefinite, as long as the rights holder keeps up the renewal paperwork and associated processing fees, and the trademark is being actively used. Unfortunately in many cases Mattel let a lot of MOTU related trademarks lapse, and so it is now a case of reaquiring those trademarks where possible and when needed, along with creating any new ones they may need.
