Star Wars on BluRay.......ho hum......

Post by TheGoodDr on Fri Jan 07, 2011 12:29 pm

So, the big broo ha ha over the Net today is the re-release (again) of Star Wars, this time on Blu Ray in September 2011.

As much as I love the OT, these films are simply fond memories of my childhood now. Like so many people in this thread ( http://www.aintitcool.com/node/47952 ) I can't stomach the Special Editions and will not be forking any $$$ what-so-ever for these films (again).

Maybe when George Lucas finally kicks the bucket we might see high-def versions of the "ORIGINAL" Original Trilogy because its seems these versions won't be seen anywhere in this latest money grab.

George Lucas has enough of money. So does FOX for that matter.
I can only expect more tweaking anyway.
I heard a while back that he was re-releasing both trilogies in 3D in cinemas again starting with Episode I and then on Blu-Ray 3D.
I can understand why people love Star Wars so much... it's great fun to watch but to be a fan must be daunting... I mean George Lucas treats SW fans so horribly. Can't wait for the Hot Toys to pour in!... Unless of course these will be endlessly re-released aswell. Star Wars is pretty cool.

Do you guys own the original trilogy on vhs? I got them for my birthday when I was 14 years old and play them now and then.
In this new bluray edition are they including all the deleted scenes from the OT? Sandstorm, Wampa invasion etc?

On another note, have you guys seen this before?

Apparently it ain't Hamill.

Yeah, until the day that someone releases high quality versions of the original theatrical versions Lucas won't get another cent out of me personally. I mean Lucas can make all the changes he wants as long as the original versions are still preserved and available, and if not, screw him he won't get my money again.

And you just know that they will be released one day, even if that day is long down the line after George has popped his togs.

Ahh a new media format and an additional 5-10 seconds of footage that doesn't really add anything to the franchise. If the Luke lightsaber scene is legit, then cool but big whoop - I prefer to reserve my girlish screams for other events .... music concerts, finding grails at oversea toy outlets and when meeting comic greats.

I'll buy the bluuray versions somewhere down the line, maybe when they are in the special deals section at JB Hi-Fi. SW is sooo last year, Twilight FTW lol

Yep, I've heard that the sandstorm scene should be on it.

I've also heard that this edition of The Phantom Menace may have a lot of alterations from the last edition released on DVD, including Episode II's CGI model of Yoda replacing the puppet, for instance.

It looks like George has really exhausted the SW barrell for this one. Hopefully this will be the last true release.
I am a casual SW fan but own the original trilogy on VHS, the SE on VHS and the LE DVD aswell. Okay.... Salacious Crumb rocks my socks. Star Wars is pretty alright.

Will get this. I no longer buy any DVDs but only blurry. Not into watching inferior resolution on new gen technology. Will be interesting to revisit threads in 9 months to see who did or did not buy it.

Still there is not a lot of solid info regarding the content, yet...this may turn people to the dark side.

I may or may not buy them special features will decide this one.
With regards to seeing the original SW and ESB on blu-ray I remember reading somewhere it won't happen as the original films for these have not been looked after and now in very poor condition(this may be my memory playing tricks on me too) I think i read it around the time when rumuors of bluray and 3D cinema release(to be released one a year starting in 2012).
Personally I have lost count of how many copies I have of SW/ESB and ROTJ I have.

I didn't give too much thought to it. I like the idea of having the OT on Blu-Ray proper (unedited) but we know that isn't going to happen. And I have them all on DVD anyway.
But I would like to see all the extras, deleted scenes and such. I'll buy them, but it'll be a ways away before I do.

Nitey - Yeah I've seen that scene before, didn't realise it wasn't Hamill though I guess it's plausible as you don't see his face and Vader doesn't exactly need lip syncing to make that part work Wink

Speaking of Star Wars.....I just finished watching Adywan's Star Wars: Revisited. Anyone else here seen this cut of A New Hope? I hope George has! This is how a re-edit/Special Edition should be done! Smile

Yeah his upgrade was great
I loved the switched dialogue in Obiwans hut
The explosion of Alderran was great as was the introduction of the death star.
I think what I loved the most was his treatment of Greedo and the aliens in the cantina just the little things he added were fantastic.
Apparently he is waiting for the bluray release to see what he can do with his updates on Empire and Jedi

Yeah, the intoduction of the Death Star is just awesome in this version. And it's amazing how simply changing the score for the lighsaber duel makes it so much more dramatic.

He's corrected so many little things as well. For example during the Sale of the Droids, the scene where R5-D4 appears behind R2, even though seconds before his motorvator has just blown, has been removed to ensure continuity of the scene.

And I particularly loved the fact that now Chewie ends up with a medal at the end!

Re: Star Wars on BluRay.......ho hum......

Post by TheGoodDr on Sat Jan 08, 2011 5:11 pm

Yeah, I think for me even though he has made changes, none of them 'detract' from the scene you're supposed to be watching. The standout of the Revisited film is the corrections....changes made because things are so obviously wrong. For example, one thing that infuriates me about ROTJ is Boba Fett being 'reversed' when he points his gun at Boushh. You'd think with all the tweeking and bullshit changes made to ROTJ that Lucas would at least FIX this so that Boba is the right-way-around!

Getting back to Star Wars though, the film I saw at the drive-in as a 6year old is still the film for me. As I've said before, for me, film is not only about the story being told, but when I watch a film made in the 70's, I want to experience a film made in the 70's. Film represents a period of history in which it was made. This is why what Spielberg did with the release of ET (giving the consumer both the updated and original untouched versions of the film in one package) is tremendous as it caters to those who want to relive and continue the memory of what it was like seeing that film for the very first time.

This may push me into Blu-ray. I'm still a luddite with a standard DVD player. As much as I dislike most of the SE changes, you're right - we're not getting the original OT.
