Plane engine on fire- TheGoodDr is lucky to be alive.

Post by Shadowless on Wed Sep 01, 2010 5:21 am

Did anyone see the news this morning about the plane that caught fire in the US. I received a call from the Good Dr today. He was on that plane.
He is well, but understandably shaken.

Yeah the Doc sent me an SMS this morning whilst I was getting my beauty sleep in a Seattle hostel. Was happy to hear that he was safe and sound. As I said over the phone this afternoon, now would be the time to buy a lotto ticket - I would obviously get a small suggestion fee from the winnings for making said purchase.

Yeah, he said he was going to buy a ticket when he got home.
I must admit it shook me too. I got bit choked up over what could have been after he got off the phone. All is good though and that is the most important thing. It sounds like he had the best time over there. I was just saying to my wife this morning before I knew all this, I hope he had a great time. I mean, you go away for a weekend and its not so good, then you have only wasted a weekend. But weeks away in the US? Glad all went well. Sounds like he bought bunch of stuff too. Sounds like someone else did too. Wink

Wow, glad to hear Paul is ok, that would be a shitty experience, but glad to hear the holidays (both docs and bolos) are going well!

It's only a matter of time before a Qantas plane goes down. So many problems because the tightarse bastards skimp on the maintenance. You couldn't pay me enough to fly with them.

Having seen the damage sustained as a result of a turbine fan blade breaking off, I am (like all the other passengers aboard this plane) incredibly lucky to be alive. If the blade had broken off and flown upwards and pierced the wing and the fuel tanks,.....well, I will say no more. It could have even flown off towrds the plane (instead of outwards as it did) and entered the cabin.....

Seeing your plane on fire is quite a surreal experience......one I will never forget. I honestly thought my time was up.

I remember when I got engaged and the pilot came down the isle looked outside went back into the cockpit and said that due to a technical problem we will be landing in Rome instead of Zurich
That freaked me out heaps, seeing sparks coming out the side of your engine I would have lost my freakin mind

I guess there's going to be some time between long haul flights eh Doc? I'll email a pic of the crop duster I had to catch from Seattle up to Vancouver. Survival rate on that baby would have been zero if one of the engines went out.

Freaky! I'm glad Qantas managed to maintain their "no crash" record (although the number of safety incidents appears to be rising).

Cheers.

It's because Americans think that when Aussies say "A" that they're actually saying "I".....drove me nuts over there everytime I had to spell my name for what-ever reason.

I was on board a plane a few years back that had to make an "unscheduled landing for safety reasons"...never found out exactly what for or why at the time, but it was amazing how quickly just that particular incident made the inside of the cabin turn into panick central, I can't imagine what it must have been like on board during something like this.

Glad it landed safely and you (and everyone else on board) got away safely. Any landing you can walk away from, as they say...

Post by TheGoodDr on Sat Sep 04, 2010 5:35 pm

You know Sledge, it was remarkably calm on board as the sutuation unfolded. It was really only the passengers at the rear of the plane (behind the wings) that knew what was actually going on in terms of seeing the engine on fire.

When the Captain made his initial announcement that we had suffered a engine malfunction, he stated that pseengers on the right hand side of the place might see an orange "glow"........ummm, yeah, also known as flames! Wink

As the Captain dumped the fuel (a process which took about 45minutes) the plane started to shudder quite violently. This was a result of the change in the plane's weight and necessity for the pilot to constantly adjust the speed of the plane as it got lighter. This is what really started to make the passengers at the front of the plane start to worry........I can't imagine what it would have been like if all on board actually knew that we were in fact on fire.

And totally agree with the A / I thing....even with my short surname it is a pain to constantly correct. You end up putting on a yank accent in the end.
