What's the craziest toy bargain you've found in a store?

Post by bowspearer on Fri Jul 23, 2010 7:59 pm

Thought I'd put this one out there as it should prove interesting with all our different interests. What's your craziest experience with scoring a bargain on a toy in a store (retailer as opposed to auction site)?

Mine would have to be the time I fluked going into K-Mart when they were clearing out their Supreme Starscreams for a price of -wait for it- $12 down from $109. I wound up buying 2 and selling the 2nd one for 60 bucks.

Tough question.

I was pretty happy to find the "Doctor Who - Voyage of the Damned" boxset (with four (4) figures) for $20.00 and the first series of "Doctor Who - Classics" figures for $7.00 each (or maybe they were $8.00 each).

I also scored an assortment of Buffy action figures for $10.00 each at one time, although they didn't have the best selection which was a little disappointing.

I don't think I've ever found an extreme bargain (especially as I always weaken and buy products ASAP for fear that they will sell out and I'll never see them again on shelves).

Cheers.

Not a figure bargain, but here's a good one.

When Mario Party 4 came out on the Nintendo GameCube, Kmart had a release week special in their catalogue.

Buy the game and an official Nintendo GameCube controller for $29.99.

Neutral

$29.99

...

Buy a new release $89.99 game, and a $49.99 controller together for $29.99

Shocked

Now, if you do the math, those two items come to $139.98 together, so one assumes the "1" was left off the front of the price in a catologue typo, and it was supposed to be a $10 saving.

I fully expected the price not to be honored, and be told that it was a printing error, especially when the electronics counter girl noted the rediculous price, and called her manager. But all the manager did was come down, look at the catologue, and say "if that's what the catologue says, then that's what it must be".

Very Happy

That was probably the craziest advertised bargain I've had, but I did have one accidental one even better...

I found the Spider-Man Classics Kraven figure at Target for about $14.95.

A decent price, but nothing noteworthy.

I take it to the counter, and there's two teenage guys manning it, who both gave me the "why is an adult buying a toy for? Loser..." look (when they weren't too busy talking to eachother to acknowledge me).

I hand over a twenty, and after about half a minute (their conversation was more important than customer service apparently) the primary guys hands me $35.05 in change.

Suspect

They gave me change for a fifty.

So I stand there, half dumbfounded, and half waiting for one of them to realise the error, and all I get is a "what the hell is your problem?" look from the pair, so I decided screw it, and just took the change.

tongue

So yeah, they PAID me $15.05 to take the Kraven figure.

pirat

I've also scored PLENTY of great figures for $1.95/$2 from Toys R Us clearances too over the years:
- Deadly Alliance figures (including the Lady Death "Alive" variant)
- Tomb Raider (movie) monkey statues
Plus more...

Not quite a toy bargain but when I bought my Receiver/speaker setup when the guy came to install and set it all up I watched with interest as he brought in, opened and hooked up a dvd player ... I tried my best to tell him but just couldn't talk for the hour he was here

Supanova 2005 or 2006, i walked away with nearly all Neca Motu stactions, plus ram-man, evil-lyn and hordak busts, PLUS the Sorceress, Tri-klops and Trap-Jaw statues. Stactions cost me $10 each, Busts were $30 a pop and the statues were $110 each, monster haul......

The best in store was when the lotr craze was on, Single pack boromir (previously only available in the fellowship pack) and Helms deep gimli single pack (previously only available in helms deep pack) both in ttt boxes were only released here and NZ. I walked into Big W first thing in the morning at Eastgardens, found they had restocked the shelves and found 8 of each. They sold on US ebay for minimum $125 USD each, paid for my MOTU exclusives and half of the reg figs........

I managed to find both the variant ML Phoenix and Cable in Malvern Target on the pegs and bought them for RRP $14.99-16.99 each at the time.

Equivalent to this was probably that Hasbro Hulk Classics wave which sold for $6.99 each at ALDI. I got the entire set and spare She-Hulk.

I think for me it had to be the Jaaks 12 inch Ringside Rebels figures.
They were a Kmart exclusive in the U.S and crazy rare over there.
Kmart Australia got them in and were selling them for $12!!!

Hogan, Rock and Y2J were in the series and The Hogan looked great.

The strange thing was alot of the packaging was damaged on them so I dont know if Kmart got them cheap or what the story was?

I got a vintage Star Wars POTF (coin series) Yakface when I was a kid for $1 in a bargain bin at a local toystore, the kicker being I lost him amongst my figures and never found him until I was in my mid teens so he is in mint unplayed with condition Very Happy

And Mahz, that is a brilliant luck story with your Yak Face figure!

As for me...about the best I've ever had is finding the Galactic Heroes Jango Fett/Obi-Wan 2 pack at Hobbyco (back when it was in the midcity centre) at retail price when they were nowhere to be seen for looooong time - unless you were on ebay & happy to pay upwards of $50.
At least, thats all I can remember. Razz

Went to local toyworld and put on layby passenger train and train station, while i was there I asked the lady about a previous catalogue where if you purchased a toy story set you got a promo set with the green alien
She said yeah they still had some and people were forgetting to give them out so she had a few, she then asked how many kids i have , i said 4 so she gave me 4 sets for free!!
They also have a $10 voucher if you layby more than $200 of lego in one hit, so i said she can keep the voucher if i could get some more of the promo sets, she says sure how many would you like, not wanting to sound greedy I said whatever you fell comfortable giving me, so she gave me another 4 sets!!

Kenner Alien & Predator Figures from World For Kids when they where first released for $1.95 (They should have been $11.95) Stripped the pegs of everything ended up with 2 shopping trollies full. (Sold them all at collectors fair for $10 because I am a capitalistic pig.)

When Venture went under scored 35 Rescue Force Transformers for $0.95 and a Heap of Heman II for $0.49 (Which is probably what Space He-man is worth)

Star Trek TNG figures from K-mart for $0.28 there was one store that had these well after they had been and gone everywhere else and I would buy the whole pegs worth every time I wend there. Eventually the toy manager dragged out this huge box of dusty figures just so he would not have to stock the pegs any more.

I've had a few, but the ones I remember are when a girlfriend hit Chatswood Kmart and noticed a lone ML fig from the Sentinel series. She rang me and asked if I needed it and when I said yes she asked for the manager of toys cos it had no price. She haggled it to a $1 and he ended up giving her the left over of the case, nearly completing two Sentinels.

The other was when my mate at work did deliveries to Aldis when the Foom wave hit, and straight bought the cases as he delivered them from 3 stores, still have 5 sets left, lol
