Looks good. I think Thor has easily moved up to my No. 1 most anticipated comic book film of 2011.

I'm still not sure about Chris Hemsworth, but given the fantastic supporting cast (Hopkins, Portman, etc), hopefully they'll be able to pick up any slack.

Cheers.

This film will live or die based on how well Hemsworth does in the title role, but right now I'm just not feeling it. His acting performance seems awfully stagnant for the most part. Maybe in the context of the final film it will work better...

I did like the coffee mug schtick though... Laughing

GREAT film! Definitely one of the better recent superhero films.

I liked the balance between Asgard and Earth.

The film definitely left me wanting more. And I'll have to eat my hat about Chris Hemsworth, he did very well in the role.

Cheers.

Tickets bought off to see it tomorrow with my daughter. Can't wait. This will be the first movie I have chosen to see in the cinemas since The Dark Knight. Since then it has all been kids flicks.

Marvel have done well with this movie, Hemsworth was great as Thor and he was well supported by Hopkins and Portman. I thought Hiddleston was a great choice as Loki.
This is the first movie(outside animated movies) where I thought that the 3D component worked really well.
Asgard was amazingly detailed and make sure you stay past the end credits it is definitely worthwhile.

All I can say is Bring on Captain America because if it is as good as this I will be one happy fan.

Saw it this afternoon - 3D seems to be the only option for most of the cinemas in my area.

I went in with low expectations after seeing so many of my fav Marvel characters get the royal screwing - Daredevil, The Punisher and Ghost Rider *shudder*. I really enjoyed Thor and thought it had a great mix of story, adventure and comedy.

Time to go dig up some of my old Walt Simonson Thor issues.

I just come home from seeing this movie. It was very well done and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was so much better than what the trailers made it out to be.

I am now seriously anticipating Captain America and the Avengers movie. I don't know how they are going to pull off the Avengers with the way Thor finished, without forcing it.

Re: Thor (2011) Official Movie Thread

Post by DroothR on Tue Apr 26, 2011 1:02 pm

Here's a write-up I did for a filmmaker's forum on another site that I thought I'd repost here:
Australian Box Office for last weekend:

1 F5 7.4 10
#2 Thor 5.3
#3 Rio 1.9 12mil
#4 hop 1.7 9mil
#5 Arth 1.4
#6 paul 1mil 4.3
http://www.moviehole.net/201140029-thor-losing-out-to-fast-sequel-at-australian-box-office

Basically, there's a whole list of reasons that Thor didn't do bigger.

- Opening against "Fast 5".
Not only does this series have name recognition, but the series is HUGE in Australia. This country is full of "rev-heads" who think that speeding and being dangerous on the road is a way of life, so pretty much nothing on Earth (short of perhaps Avatar 2) would top it.

- Poor marketing.
The surprisingly artistic billboards and posters are up, but there's been very little of any TV exposure. I've seen TV spots maybe twice, and aside from some throwaway mentions on morning news programs last Thorsday mentioning it was out, there's been little televised presence.

- Lack of merchandise.
By the time Iron Man 2 came out, Target had an entire AISLE of Iron Man 2 toys and merchandise, as many retailers did. This weekend AFTER release, I go into a Target and see the Thor kiddy hammer and helmet accessories hidden beside the action figures. That's it. No action-figures, no store displays, none of it.

- Late release date change.
The release date got bumped up from April 28 to April 21 less than a month ago, with no notification. Honestly, if I didn't have such a long commute to work, and see the billboard posters, I wouldn't have known the film was opening a week early.

There are plenty more reasons, but those are the biggest.

So when you factor everything in, Thor did pretty well. I could definitely see it having a strong second weekend (especially if they can get merch in stores to incite kiddies to bug their parents).

I suspect that the late release bump was done in an effort to use Australia to generate early word-of-mouth buzz for the film (via social media, etc), to build anticipation in other (larger) markets.

I think the lack of standard sessions is also hurting Thor's numbers. My local has no standard or VMAX sessions and are only showing it as 3D. Being slugged $22-25 for a single ticket hurts my pocket so I can imagine it being painful for parents taking the kids out - I'll be waiting a couple days before seeing it a second time.

Yeah the FF franchise has a huge following out west.

I like what you did there Wink

I think Iron Man 2 hurt retailers too much and that is why there isn't much merchandise in stores. The figures tend to peg warm way too much and at $15+ per figure they don't move fast.

With no foreseeable comic series I am not even interested in the Thor figures. I just hope that when Captain America starts it's build up I can at least get my Crossbones, US Agent and Red Skull

Just saw the film. Hadn't see any of the trailers (keeping my record going on that one) and I was really happy with the film.

It's just an enjoyable piece of escapism. It's not trying too hard to be super-serious, or super-emotional. It's not super violent or cheesy. It's just a really good example of a fun super-hero film. Coming out, it reminded me of how I felt coming out of The Mummy. It's almost old-fashioned in construction, but all of the effects and 3D work are fantastic.

Different from Iron Man, but right up there with it.

Saw it last night and loved it! Like Simmo said - fun and entertaining.

At the risk of throwing this thread off course, my only problem was that I couldn't find anywhere to watch in in 2D and for my first 3D experience (having a baby has basically stopped me going to the cinema) I wasn't all that impressed. I look forward to the DVD coming out so I can watch it at home on my nice, clear, 2D, normal TV....

This weekend AFTER release, I go into a Target and see the Thor kiddy hammer and helmet accessories hidden beside the action figures. That's it. No action-figures, no store displays, none of it.

It is finally beginning to dawn on retailers (and to a lesser extent, distributors) that toy lines associated with a blockbuster film don't necessarilly translate to $$$ in the bank....

Even though Iron Man 2 toys littered the shelves, the reality is, they sold poorly. As did Tron legacy figures. And depsite Transformers 3 hitting our screens mid year Hasbro AU have scaled the line right back, resulting in only limited assortments being released here to support the film. Captain America will literally have only ONE assortment of figures released here. And Green Lantern.....I'm not expecting any release of action figures at all.

Bottom line is, toys are now (more than ever) for young children.....and I'm talking about kids less than 8 or 9 years of age. Once a child hits 10, 11 (with 12 now being considered HIGH SCHOOL) most have lost all interest in playing with action figures. Look no further than your local K-mart's toy section....it is a shadow of what it was. Speak to a Toyworld owner and you'll hear stories of how dire things really are for them (2010 was the worst year on record for a lot of Toyworld stores).

The whole movie/toy tie-in thing will continue and prove to be a money spinner for countries with large populations, but times certainly are a changin' in Oz.

Yeah the lack of 2D sessions is sh*tting me off big time. I want to see it a couple more times but not at $20+ a session. 3D has its place but I'm getting annoyed with everything being 'made for 3D' etc.

Thought it was great, Marvel are getting good at their use of humour, limited but at the right time & place. Everything looked /sounded great, Destroyer was cool, warriors 3 were quirky enough to be a little out of place on earth. Thought they did Heimdal & Loki really well and just enough teasers & name drops for the previous/upcoming movies. So we saw Hawkeye & maybe Luke Cage? (big black guy thor fights at the compound?)I agree with others above, like alot of movies recently there's no real need for this to be 3d tho...Bring on Cap
