Iron Man

Post by simmo on Fri Apr 11, 2008 7:29 am

So with Marvel about to launch a second Iron Man series, I've been thinking about the character. And his books have never sold all that well. He's generally always been the lowest selling of their primo heroes. Why is that? There's nothing about the character that wouldn't lend him to good sales. And with the explosion of tech recently, surely that should make him all the more relevant.

I often wonder, with books like Iron Man's whether the comic companies need to just bite the bullet, hire some massive name creators and [i]really[i] give the book a push, regardless of budget. He's such a key character in the MU now, that I'd say it's probably worth the risk to go, OK, here you go Mark Millar and, I don't know, Steve McNiven. You've got a year to make this book #1. Do it.

When you compare the current Iron Man character to the one that was around in the 80's you'll notice that Tony has lost his trademark flaws, e.g. alcoholism, the suit's limitations (it needed to be recharged everyone now and then) etc. Marvel needs to dirty this guy a tad.

I agree but look at Superman he is invincible except for kryptonite and he has thousands of stories and still sells well.
Especially with the movie I agree that they need to bring the talent in to make him #1.
Maybe the Skrull thing will tarnish him?

Don't forget magic for Supes. The thing with Supes is every child, and nearly every adult male, wants to be him.

Re: Iron Man

I can't see Iron Man sustaining a second ongoing when his first has never done well at all with possibly the exception of Heroes Reborn over ten years ago which was a huge stunt which didn't meet the sales targets and the relaunch of the title a couple of years back by Ellis & Granov which was embarrassingly late and only a very short run. Tony Stark seems to be a character who is meant to have charisma to balance the aspects of his personality where he's a jerk but I think writers have never actually give Tony that charisma he needs. After fourty plus years I couldn't list 5 Iron Man stories I'd recommend to a friend if they really loved the movie and wanted to follow the character some more.

Re: Iron Man

I've been slowly reading through some early Iron Man stories (via the Essentials TPBs) and I think this has probably been the only time Stark's charisma has been properly captured - he's portrayed as Marvel's Clarke Gable. The only other memorable arcs have been those featuring his battles with the bottle and when Rhodes wore the suit.

I was planning on taking the old man to see it tomorrow and I had a hell of time trying to explain who Iron Man is. I basically settled with it's a dude in suit and there's heaps of special effects.

If that is the one you're asking about Deno, I have it.......it's great book.....obviously for the art work, but also for behind the scene info regarding designs that ended up in the finished film.
