Gambling

Post by The Dr Of Style on Sat Apr 24, 2010 5:44 am

So last night I visited Brswood Casino and actually gambled......first time in close to 3 yrs.. and walked out a few rounds of drinks/dinner & $145 positive....and first time in a long while I've left the place with a profit......my biggest win is $350...I play the odd game of poker (maybe 6times a year)with my mates and sometimes win, sometimes lose.....I recon about 10 yrs ago I was ahead of most players but since poker has exploded I'm now well behind in experience & skill.....never touch anything at the TAB.... and maybe buy 5 lotto tickets a year...... just wondering what anyone else does?

The odd NRL match, some electronic black jack at the local RSL and home poker games (very few and far between). But i do enjoy hanging with my mates at the tab and putting $5 on every couple of races, particularly the dogs, and get to the races once a year aswell, I spend very little and I have fun so i'm happy with that. Best win was ladies day last year at Rosehill, last race, $20 on the nose on a 16-1 roughie, came in, a nice $320, there was an 82 year old man next to me on the finish line won $1800 on it, he was so happy, it was quite amusing!!

I have a punt now and then. I stick to cards most of the time but I occasionally put a couple of bucks on the horses and dogs while down at the pub. No real science behind my betting method, just shrapnel on the dog or horse with the coolest sounding name.

I tend to break even on most occasions. The most I've won in one night was around $700. I lost about US$100 playing in Vegas. I literally bumped into Jay-Z and Beyonce .. and their entourage o f bodyguards ... as soon as I stepped away from the table.

I buy about a half-dozen lotto tickets a year.

That's it for me.

Generally speaking, gambling is for suckers and dopes.

Nope, just doesn't appeal to me personally. I mean I've bought a scratchie here or dropped a coin in a pokie there, but only out of abject boredom on some random, and rare, occasion. Never been that lucky anyhow, plus I guess I've seen a couple of families destroyed by gambling which puts a bitter taste on those kind of things for me, especially the pokies and ponies.

I'm not a gambler. I usually give my sister a couple of bucks if we're out to stick in the pokies. I actually put in $2 last weekend and ended up with $70, which was good.
Otherwise, it's a rarity.

I suck at it so I don't do it.

My friends & I play poker while we are drinking but we just use the poker chips, not real money.

Best way not to loose money is not to gamble. I can't think of anything worse than handing over my hard earnt $$$ only to get nothing in return. I'd rather work hard and save my money.

Every time I enter a casino the thing that strikes me the most is that most of the people there throwing their money away are the very people who should be doing something more positive with their cash.

Even when I went to Vegas I didn't throw down a single dollar in a casino.

So true, it's like alcohol, responsibly it's no worries, but someone gets carried away and lives are ruined, personally I believe pokies/drugs/alcohol are the biggests blights on society, other than the people abusing them.....

I just don't get pokies. Never understand how people can sit in front of them for hours of a day, pressing buttons.

I do like playing poker, and particularly taking the Dr of Styles money off him. I'm not a big one for betting on sport though...I prefer gambling where I at least have some control over the outcome.

I prefer video game gambling, where I can bet $1 Million on one hand of blackjack and lose it. It makes me laugh.

While I like the idea of getting cheap meals & drinks....hell I even got a cheap round of golf in Adelaide due to places having tons of pokies the social cost to these this over rules any sane reason for bringing them in (no pokies in WA except for the casino). and yeah Good Dr the wrong people are generally the ones who get sucked in most.....the most profitable lotto kiosks outside of the cbd in perth are in some of the worst areas......

I agree with TheGoodDr - the people who make money via the casino are the people who own the casino.

But on the other hand, I used to go to Burswood occasionally with friends just to watch, and play Roulette, which is definitely my game. The difference between the people throwing thousands of dollars away in minutes (and man oh man do people do that, wandering around and looking at people burning more money than I make in a month in minutes is repulsive) and the people who play for fun, with a small amount they can afford to lose, is pacing yourself and betting smart. Roulette is statistically the best odds in a casino, with several 50-50 bets (red/black, odd/even, first 18/last 18) that are more like 49.5-49.5 bets because of the 0/00s that aren't covered (thus the house ultimately always winning). People who throw chips onto random numbes rarely win anything - though playing a table covering a percentage of the numbers that have frequently come up is statistically shown to be optimal. I'm fascinated by the statistics of roulette (and also keno - real keno, not slot-machine-keno), and also watching the body language of the people playing poker and playing each other. Overall I've made about $600 or so from Burswood, taking into consideration all of the winnings and all of the losses, but that's all from going there to have a good time with friends and a night out, not going there with the intention of winning.

Usually with Casinos if I do go I think of it as entertainment and go into it with the mind set that you will loose it. I also have been known to use the 2 pocket system. Pocket A is for Gambling and Pocket B is for winning. (Anything you win goes into Pocket B and is not to be touched. Once pocket A is empty you leave) Although my current partner I know has a problem with gambling so I say clear of them.

Occasional I'll get a Lotto Ticket, Melb cup (Only won once thanks to Sub Zero) etc but nothing major.

When video pokies came into Vic I wrote a program to simulate one with the sytem odds. Garenteed that I would loose money slower than anyone else but there is no way of every winning other than being in the right place at the right time. Now that I got into the Arcade/Electronic gaming maintance and understand how everything works I know the odds on winning on anything elecrtonic are very controlled (The way machines are linked they pay out only after X amount of money has already been put into a machine so even on big wins the establishments are still making money. Modern Arcade Crane machines work the same way).

The odds are usually stacked not in the Gamblers favor.
