Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

Post by Sledge Hammer! on Mon Feb 07, 2011 8:35 am

Film looks good visually, but I'm still far from convinced by Chris Evans' casting, he just seems to lack the authority and presence that Cap needs. I mean this is the guy who everyone else is supposed to look to for leadership and moral guidance in the Marvel Universe, so you need someone who can carry that weight, and so far I'm not convinced that this is the guy for that. Evans just seems a little too 'happy-go-lucky' for me from what I've seen here. Maybe I'll be proven wrong though.

Still looking definitely forward to checking the film out when it its though...

Oh, and I imagine that Cap having a gun is going to send some fans into nerdrage, though personally in the context of the film and a WW2 take on the character it doesn't bother me at all.

The glimpse of Red Skull looked cool, and was that Dum-Dum Dugan I saw in there as well?

By the way, here's a screengrab of Red Skull, for those that want a better look:

Spoiler:

The weird, and cool, thing is, I can still see Hugo Weaving in that, yet his Red Skull-ness seems about as good as one could have hoped for. thumbs up1

I love how Steve is all scrawny before the serum, I wonder how they did that (CGI face over an emo's body?)

Yep. Just as they did for that one topless shot in the first Spider-Man film.

Skinny/pasty body double with key actor head replacement.

Yeah they either went with the copy and paste method or they've used applications similar to MOVA etc - http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/298696

Looks good.

I'm interested in hearing more about the other comic book characters they're including in the film. I thought there were plans for The Invaders to feature rather heavily? Perhaps they scrapped those plans?

Cheers.

I recall them mentioning some version of The Invaders, maybe as a passing comment rather than an on-screen cameo. The Superbowl teaser did show a glimpse of The Howling Commandos - I know I spotted Dum Dum Dugan - and I remember them casting someone for Arnim Zola.

They were definitely planned to be included at one point:

http://www.filmbuffonline.com/FBOLNewsreel/wordpress/2010/02/07/the-invaders-are-joining-captain-america/

Maybe they were replaced by the Howling Commandos so that Captain America remained the only super-hero in the film? I'm sure the studio proably thought audiences would be far more accepting of a single super-hero rather than an entire team of (mostly unknown) super-heroes.

Cheers.

The fact that there is no full length trailer is starting to concern me.
I am not sure if this is a good or bad indicator about the movie

That seems to be a trend happening more and more lately for a lot of films. Perhaps hollywood is cutting back and trying it's hand at less trailer based early advertising, and just doing the hard traditional advertising push closer to the actual release date...

It has nothing to do with either.

Marvel/Paramount have a HUGE film coming out soon call Thor.

They need people to go see that first, then they can get people interested in Captain America.

It's in their best interests ($$$) to focus (almost) all of the marketing muscle on one film at a time, to maximize ticket sales to both films, instead of splitting the interest between two competing films (competing in terms of attention) at once.

It was worth the wait.

Pre-super-soldier serum Steve special effects are well done. Captain America and Thor definitely have a huge lead on Green Lantern for most most anticipated super-hero films in 2011.

Cheers.

Well after watching the trailer without being interrupted by customers I gotta say I am impressed. Its almost like it is low key after seeing the action of the Thor trailer. I think the feel of the trailer is really good and I can now not wait to see the movie
