Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

Post by DroothR on Tue Mar 23, 2010 5:29 pm

Captain America's casting is now official.

Directed by Joe Johnston.

Starring Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, and Hugo Weaving as Red Skull.

Word is that Evans has signed a 9 picture deal, including 3 Captain America films, The Avengers, plus 5 more appearances at Marvel Entertainment's discretion.

I reckon he'll make a good Capt. America..So lucky they did choose Tatum Channing or the guy from the office.

Sunshine itself is a pretty good movie. The soundtrack in particular is just beautiful.....I have no doubts you'll enjoy the film Smile

Confirmation!
Captain America Movie: Red Skull Cast
Hugo Weaving confirmed as the Red Skull in Marvel Studios' 'Captain America: The First Avenger'

Posted: 2010-05-04 09:38:15 Updated: 2010-05-04 12:15:06

Marvel Studios announced today that Hugo Weaving has been cast to star as Johann Schmidt aka the Red Skull in the studio's highly anticipated movie "Captain America: The First Avenger" opposite Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell. In the early comics, Johann Schmidt was drafted into loyal service of The Third Reich and renamed "The Red Skull." The character will be updated for the feature adaptation. Joe Johnston will direct the film penned by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.

Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige will produce "Captain America: The First Avenger." Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel and Louis D'Esposito will executive produce. The film will be released in the U.S. on July 22, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Captain America and the Red Skull
"Captain America: The First Avenger" will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

Weaving was last seen in "The Wolfman" and his voice is very recognizable as Megatron from "Transformers" and "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" as well as Noah the Elder from "Happy Feet." His other film credits include starring in "V For Vendetta," "The Matrix" franchise and "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

In addition to "Captain America: The First Avenger," Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including the highly anticipated sequel, "Iron Man 2," starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow on May 7, 2010, "Thor" on May 6, 2011, and "Marvel Studios' The Avengers" on May 4, 2012.

Stay tuned to Marvel.com for the official word on all things to do with "Captain America: The First Avenger" and all Marvel movies!
What I find really interesting is that they've listed the title of the Avengers film as "Marvel Studios' The Avengers".

In an effort to avoid confusion/association with the TV series/movie of the same name, I was wondering if they'd do something like that to differentiate...

Great news about Weaving. Hopefully Evans will be encouraged by Weaving's skills and actually put in some kind of effort into his performance.

He was fine as Human Torch, but it seems he plays a variation of Johnny Storm in pretty much every film, including Sunshine. They should have cast his near identical brother Scott Evans as Captain America. Then they would have had a fresh-face for much less money, yet they could have traded on the "Evans" name.

Cheers.

Chris Evans???

Not sure about that. He's certainly a lot smaller a guy than I thought they would cast for Cap. America.

I will go nuts if he is cast as He-man in the new MOTU movie!

That sucks. Chris Evans is Johnny Storm. It messes with my suspension of disbelief if he's also Cap. Fucking lazy casting by Marvel Studios imo.

Yeah it is possible - Bale (Batman), Norton (American History X), me (72kg nerd to 120kg slob and back down again).
Evans is a strange casting for me but so was Ledger. I just hope this movie is better than the last version - man that sucked nards.

Yeah, from the description of what the guy saw (and subsequent fan made renderings) the costume is pretty darn cool.
Hard to believe that it's taken until 2010 to get Cap on the big screen.

I like it.

Maybe a little too "modern" looking for a WW2 setting, but I'm willing to suspend disbelief on the basis they would outfit Captain America with the latest technology/design/materials available at the time and certain aspects like the boots, gloves and belt do help to "date" it.

Not sure how the metal "mask" part of the helmet is going to work for Chris Evans when actually wearing it. It looks like it would be incredibly uncomfortable and I don't see why they just didn't do the "mask under helmet" design like in the comic books.

Cheers.

seems too modern for WWII, but would work really well for the Avengers
