M.A.S.K.

Post by bowspearer on Fri Feb 05, 2010 4:36 am

Not sure if anyone else collects this or has fond memories of it, but I've nearly got everything for it, just missing a few parts, a few vehicles and 3 of the 4 Euro adventure packs.

I gather you are not talking about the Jim Carey movie?

No, I'm talking about M.A.S.K. or Mobile Armoured Strike Kommand, for short. The series consisted of figures which I think are 2 inches tall (never measured mine) who have masks which each have unique powers and who pilot James Bond style vehicles, in the sense that a motorcycle might become a helecopter, a Harley Davidson sidecar a minisub, or even an oil tanker truck a mobile headquarters. Later on, the concept even advanced to the point where the vehicles split in 2 and each part turned into a separate vehicle, for example, a corvette turned into a tank and a shuttle and a bobcat turned into a jet and an all terrain vehicle. Most of the conversions were spring loaded too, meaning that for at least part of the conversion, if not all of it, all that was required was the pressing of 1 or a few buttons.

Loved the line as a kid. Now...seems a little silly, but some of the stuff was very cool. I fondly remember the main badguys jet/chopper thing. That was awesome

Actually they hold up damn well for their age in most cases. The split seconds line seriously needs a new paint job and in some cases, some redesigns, and the racing series can be a bit hit an miss, but all in all, they really are awesome. Boulder Hill is definitely one of the best playsets ever made Smile

Re: M.A.S.K.

One of my main toy memories. Probably only into Transformers and Voltron more. But I had friends into those and I was on my own with M.A.S.K.

I still have most (although they have been thoroughly used).

Jackhammer was probably my favourite. But I also have Switchblade (Helicopter/Jet), Thunderhawk (Camaro/Flying Camaro?) (had to have the two leaders with their vehicles), Gator (Jeep/Jet Boat) and some of the smaller bike style ones, Iguana, Condor, Vampire and Bullet. I think that's mostly it.

Although, some years after my main M.A.S.K. phase (somewhere in late primary school I guess) I came across Detonator, unopened and untouched at a Trash'n'Treasure market in Bayswater/Wantirna. This one came out recently as it impressed my son greatly and its got one of the best transforming actions. Its a VW beetle but when you depress both door handles a bike drops out and the remainder of the car springs into a hovercraft. So you got two vehicles with a hologram figure that could pilot the second one. Awesome!

Thanks for the flashback :-)

Yeah detonator isn't bad, but there are a couple of more interesting ones in the split seconds line, like Baracuda and Stilletto. In a couple of weeks, I'll take upto date pics of everything, including my M.A.S.K. figures and add it to my collection thread.

I had Thunderhawk and Switchblade (and the green bike and another baddy bike can't remember the name). I remember one of my friends had the huge semi truck and the old school chevy bel air which were awesome!

I'll never forget when I was about 10 going to a local rsl with my parents and there was trans am in the car park (with a paint job like Thunderhawk) and the numberplate MASK. This totally blew me away but my parents didnt get it hehe

yeah it was. Honestly, even though its kinda hokey it was alot of fun. And the toys were amazing. The figures were....i dunno, smaller than a GIJoe from memory, but not by much.

Its one of theose lines Id try to grab again if i had the money.

Well, after Silverhawks

Yeah, for me growing up, MOTU and MASK were the main 2 toy lines i got, i had 10 odd cars, 4 motorbikes, rhino, the boulder mountain set, heaps of the fig packs, i got mask and motu and my brother got transformers and ninja turtles, and looking at those figs and the BIG mask collection (the guy who has them in individual display cases) i just don't have any inclanation to get back to collecting these, i think MOTU will always be the nostalgic collectable for me, which i'm glad about as i definately don't need another expensive vintage line to collect, i'm still trying to finish of MOTU.....
