District 9 pe-ew

Post by Otter on Wed Aug 19, 2009 5:19 pm

Saw the preview for this and thought "that looks cool". Heard the radio ad that said "critics rave".
Saw the movie and thought "That sucks I want my money back"
Big stinky pile of a movie. It didnt know if it was a documentary, a comedy, an action, a splatter flick or what.
My opinion dont waste your money.

Anyone else see this and what did you think good or bad??

LOL. I loved it.

Probably my No. 1 film of 2009 (just beating out Star Trek).

That typed, I would have liked to have seen a tad more "balance" in the third act instead of just turning into an action film. The political commentary aspects at the start of the film were far more interesting to me than "bash, bang, explode" type action, although the action was VERY good (and you could actually tell what was happening, to whom and where it was happening).

Some aspects of the non-human's culture could have also been explained or expanded upon as well.

BUT at the end of the day, I thought it was great. The SFX were incredible compared to the likes of TF2, etc. The interactions between the actors and the non-humans had me convinced that they were using animatronic suits or something (but wikipedia informs me they were CGI, the director just has a lot of SFX experience).

Cheers.

man this is my movie of the year! for a movie that came out of know where, i think it blows all the other big name hollywood bullshit fils out of the water. the story was great. te acting, main guy esp, was flawless, and the cg was insane. i have seen so many movies this year and all but this and watchmen have sucked. i give distrct 9 a 9.5/10. loved evey second of this film.

Agreed, it's a hell of a thing when you can make a CGI special effect actually emote and connect with an audience, something that most film makers don't much seem to care about these days unfortunately, but which, back in the practical creature effect days, was paid much more attention to and seen as much more important. We need more of that kinda thing in films today.

See it twice now. Good flick.

(Spent a hell of a lot of time explaining the history of South Aferica to my unworldly American friends and how it echos through the movie. Totally lost on them)

I finally got a chance to see it this week, and I thought it was very good.

Not "great", but exceptionally well made.

7/10 I'd say offhand.

What are everyone's thoughts on all the sequel rumours? District 10? Prequel charting the non-human's arrival? The comedic adventures of Christopher and CJ as they travel through space encountering all sorts of wacky aliens and adventurers? Something else?

Personally, I'm torn. As much as I enjoyed District 9, I'm well and truly over Hollywood's mantra that everything that is a mild success must be turned into a major money-making franchise. I would almost like to see District 9 remain its own unique, solitary, film.

Of course, I'll be following any news of the prequel/sequel/whatever with much interest.

Cheers.

I get where you are coming from, and if there was never a sequel then I could live with that, but another part of me really wants to see Christopher come back and fulfill his promise, and find out where that story would take us.

Besides, given that the studios don't own any part of the movie, as it was all done with independant money and then they just sold distribution rights, any sequel would likely be just as independant, and only be made if writer/director Blomkamp actually wants to make another one, and has an idea of where he wants to take the story.

Plus an uprising of the Prawns could give them the opportunity to explore themes such as how segragation and racism lead to tribal warfare and genocide as part of the natural continuation of the story, in the same way that the issues poverty, race, segragation and theft of natural resources were used as underlying themes in District 9. I'd be open to it anyway.

Re: District 9 pe-ew

There's still a few things coming up in the next few months that interest me, especially The Road, The Book of Eli, Avatar and Shutter Island, all of which are already on my must see list.

Paranormal Activity seems to be getting a lot of hype too, so that's also on my radar, as is the sadly delayed 80's style action fest The Expendables, Werner Herzog's in-name-only remake of The Bad Lieutenant, highly touted sci-fi flick Moon, and Clooney's The Men Who Stare at Goats, so 99% chance I'll go see all of those as well, just so long as they open locally.

I'm also interested to see how V for Vedetta director James McTeigue's Ninja Assassin turns out, same deal for Troy Duffy's decade later follow up to Boondock Saints, Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes, the Spierig brothers latest Daybreakers, the Woody Harrelson zombie apocalypse comedy Zombieland, and Del Toro as The Wolfman. So yeah, consider my curiosity at the very least piqued for all of those as well.

I'm sure there's a few I'm forgetting too. And yes, I am a movie whore. Razz
